Thoughts about resqme keychain

I was planning to buy this keychain for my wife and me.. BUt I’ve seen some bad reviews about it...

Has anyone bought this? I hope nobody had to use it....

I just bought a pair too. I used one in an auto extrication training last week and it worked really well to break the drivers side front and rear side windows. I think i got the blue pair for $12 and change, can’t beat the price

 

I'm curious to hear if anyone has EVER needed to use something like that to escape a car. I can't imagine many situations where it would be useful.

 

I have an original German Lifehammer I boght when I got my first car in 1990. Never used it, yet.

 

For the price I think it would be worth having. At least it would be better than having nothing at all.
I carry the SOG Escape knife with me. Has the seatbelt cutter, glass breaker, and I have a good size knife blade in case of other emergencies.

 

I keep a knife and metal flashlight in the center console. If I can’t get out with that I’ll willingly hand in my man card.

 

Think about how you are going to get them when hanging upside down.... Open the console and everything is now on the roof. But when on your side, the items will go to the other side of the truck and be outta reach....(Murphy's Law)... Might want to put a string on them...hehe

 

I have one in the truck at all times. Although I've never had to use it in an emergency situation, I took one with me last time I was at the junkyard. Needless to say, the window punch and seatbelt cutter worked flawlessly.

 

It all depends where you live. I can't see that big of a need in say Arizona, but damn popular in Florida. I see regular cases where this would have been handy to the person needing the rescue or to the rescuer. I used to annually take helicopter water crash training. You think differently when you're underwater, seat belted with others, and disoriented.

 

Sorry guys. Chances are you will get struck by lightning while riding a lawnmower nude at noon next Tuesday, before needing one of these to get out of a submerged vehicle.

Key facts: 19 people died after apparently not being able to break the glass and get out of their motorcycle. MOTORCYCLE. Some were driving CONVERTIBLES WITH THEIR TOPS DOWN and drowned.
Over half the people who died in a drowning incident were not wearing their seat belts.... Let that sink in for a minute.

The number was at 1% of vehicle fatalities to begin with. Now, take the dumbassery and stupidity out of it (and the fact that most were in cars, not trucks) and you are left with very few who truly could have used that tool to help them out. Some, you could have given them a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer in the car with them and they would not be able to get out.

However, I keep one in my vehicle too... just in case I am mowing my lawn at noon next Tuesday...

 

I have had mine on my keychain for a few years. I don't see myself driving into a large body of water in Los Angeles anytime soon. But with all the stories of people leaving their babies, children, pets enclosed in their vehicle on hot days, I figured why not keep one on me.

 

Add to that, at night, after rolling down an embankment, in the dark, and being jostled around from rolling over once or twice...

 

Never used one. I did flip a car (WRX) into a tree and landed upside down in a creek. Electrics still worked so I rolled the window down (up), unbuckled, fell into headliner, and crawled out. I carry an OTF Microtech with a glass breaker on the end, but rolling the window down is much easier

 

I used my Smith& Wesson magic assist pocket knife glass breaker to pop the driver side glass on a cobalt that flipped off the highway and into a ditch 2 years ago but I was on the outside.

 

I have one in each car: hanging from the rear view mirror along with a Fox orange plastic rescue whistle. I was trained on the Resqme while working in EMS and hazmat. I have only used them in class and they worked very well. The secret is using it on the bottom corner of the side glass.

 

I'll just use the new Toyota snorkel to get out....

 

Prior to using a 4 D-cell metal flashlight over 20 years ago, I checked to see if a vehicle door was left unlocked by using the door handle. It was locked, the dashboard was on fire, the inside was filled with smoke and I was going to attempt to break the side window so that I could use a fire extinguisher.

Embarrassingly, the window wouldn’t break after several hard as possible swings and hits with the flashlight, requiring me to run back for a pick head axe.

The axe easily did the job.

You might get lucky and be able to break a side window with one swing, or, you might not because of the nice smooth round end of a flashlight. Tempered safety glass can be surprisingly hard.

That was my first and last time using a flashlight on a side window.

The cheapest, lightest and smallest effective tool to get the job done is a spring loaded center punch that you keep attached to your dashboard and sun visor with some velcro.

 

I left out the part about having a 3D cell mag light under my seat that came flying out when I flipped. May not break the window, but sure can give a nice shiner.

Best escape tool IMO

 

As FF/EMT the punches work very well, but so does a lot of objects at the corner of a side window. The seat belt cutter are effective as training, but never used one for a real extraction. Overall, I would say good tool, better to have it than not.
