Bummer it had issues, but keep at it. I love mine, and been using it quite a bit lately.

I have a Bosch in 3 5/8" for wine bottle holes. They actually aren't that bad but I use a hole hawg for it.

Hey guys, My brother has first pick on a tree that’s free if we cut & haul it (which we can). Should we? What would you do with it?

It’s a Box Elder maple about 100 yrs old. 5’ across at the longest spot, about 3 ft diameter along most of this trunk, and about 12 ft high. Some gnarly looking burl.

Any insight would be appreciated - thanks in advance!

Box elder should be really soft wood. its good for turning projects on a wood lathe, the problem you are going to be running in to is if you cut it in to slabs the wood can "check" or crack. small pieces are good for pens or bowls You can dip pieces in wax to slow the dehydration process. Theres some folks here that have more info Im sure, I hope they chime in.

the center piece on the second pic where the black streaks are is where you get the best character. Its the "spalted" box elder.

If I remember right, it also smells like shit when cutting it, especially before it's been dried.

Ive turned a couple pen blanks, and it chips out easy, but it has some nice character. The stuff I had was really dry so I dont recall any bad smell but the website I linked does say it has a bad smell.

Thanks guys. So it’s defintely not a high demand hardwood.

And I hate cutting up smelly wood. That alone is a deal breaker.

It’s not like the cherry tree we cut down a couple weeks ago. Gonna smoke most of it, waxed up the main trunks though for some eventual woodwork.

cherry has a rich color which goes nicely with walnut IMO. It also has a sweet smell when cutting, at least the dry stuff does.

Just moved into a new house, and snapped some photos of some of the furniture I have made so far. They are not the prettiest pieces, but they fit my style well.
