2018 Safety Sense

haha you are using too much logic in your response, for sure it would be better, cheaper, smarter to just get a 2018. I just don't want to accept that fact. I would see it as a learning opportunity, I do controls related projects at work and my difficulties in making the upgrade would teach me about what that technology is all about. Exactly how is it controlling the automatic brakes? is there an automatic valve, plunger to create the required hydraulic pressure?

 

Because...$. Same reason some models don't even have an option of adding sonar and BSM in lower trims. Stuff that would cost them a couple hundred to install. I wish all trim levels would come with this safety stuff, including BSM and sonar. It's really peanuts for the manufacturers to install. But they're a business. Only one thing they're worried about--the bottom line.

 

LOL, I did the oposite.. I gave up on a deal for a 17 at a dealer an hour away to make a deal for less money at a local dealership for an 18 with the same plus all the new additions. It's not like I can't turn them off if I don't want/need them.

 

I really didn't care for the TSS when I purchased my 2018, just something else to breakdown and the extra cost. But last week it payed itself off... while I was driving, I usually look 5 seconds ahead before looking to the side mirrors to switch lanes. If traffic is stopped ahead, then I know the car in front of me will stop soon. Well, as soon as I looked at my side mirror to switch lane, the safety sense kicked in. It turns out the lady in front of me slammed on her brakes to let a car switch lanes in front of her. If I didn't have TSS, I would have most likely hit her.

 

Found this thread when looking at a new Heads Up Display option. I recently bought a 2018 SR5 so I didn't have a choice with the TSS. Of the items I believe to be part of this package, I'm only really interested in the Auto Hi Beams. I think that's handy. Don't know about safety, but handy. Luckily, I haven't experienced the Pre-Collision System! The Lane Departure is fairly annoying but easily disabled. And I don't understand Adaptive Cruise Control at all. Cruise control should not be used in traffic. And if you approach another vehicle at a higher speed, don't you just change lanes and pass that vehicle? Why on earth would you want your truck to slow down to their speed? Maybe I'm missing something but I don't get it. I disable it as well.

The thing that worries me about all of these safety items is people who rely on them too much. What happens when they don't work? Not even counting malfunctions, the Owner's Manual has many pages describing the known exceptions where the TSS items won't work. So I'd rather be responsible for myself and not have the truck acting on its own.

As a side, does anyone know what the coffee cup warning is? I can't find any reference to it. The HUD thread I checked out calls it some sort of Fatigue Warning. Maybe excessive LDA alerts make the truck think you're falling asleep?

 

I love the adaptive cruise control because it enables you to use it in traffic. Regular cruise you definitely wouldn't -- your question is part of the purpose its trying to serve (moving toward a more automated driving experience). As for where it shines personally: Along the coast here in Oregon we have a lot of up-down 2-lane roads with a ton of logging trucks either flying 70 mph downhill or going 40 uphill every 3 minutes. It's pretty convenient to put your adaptive cruise control on a speed higher than the logging trucks and then let the vehicle control the speed (up or down) for you. You just steer and pay attention if the radar doesn't work. When you approach a passing lane you just get into the left lane and the truck speeds up automatically for you, because your cruise was set faster than the forward truck, and its great. It's a convenience feature.

It's not meant as a substitute to stop paying attention as it stands now in 2019. It's for convenience. How much convenience it serves to you is your opinion. It's a stepping-stone towards not needing to rely on human attention (or decision making), though. I'd trust a computer that is black-and-white over the judgement of a shit driver.

Coffee cup warning is just a timer when the truck thinks you should pull over and rest (every some-odd hours, if I remember right).

 

No, it also looks to see how many times you've crossed into other lanes. It is more than a timer.

 

If I remember right it takes time into account as well. Even if you don't swerve it's on a timer suggesting you should rest (I think it's around 3 hours).

 

TSS saved a guy who jumped out from between 2 parked cars the very first week I had the truck. I don't think my reaction time would have saved him from injury or possibly worse.

 

Do any of you know if the TSS will actually apply brakes? I've had my Brake Alert go off but I don't ever recall it slowing the truck down on its own, nor do I want to try that.

 

TSS automatically applied the brakes and I didn't hit the pedestrian. Scared the piss out of both of us.

 

Old thread, not so new tech, don't like it, buy an old/er truck.
"Didn't have a choice" , come on, salesmen may be pushy, but I doubt deadly force was used.
