So far my 2016 Tacoma V-6 TRD is getting terrible gas mileage. I know its a truck so don't tell me they don't get good mileage. I drive 60 miles each way to work and the best I have done with mileage so far is about 19 mpg. If there is even a gentle head wind, my truck stays in 5th gear. It downshifts at every small incline, even for a overpass or exit. I am driving like a grandpa, no jack rabbit starts, slow increases in speed, driving under the speed limit. I'm in Kansas where the speed limit is 75, but my max is 70 just to conserve gas. So far this truck is a total "F". Any ideas???? I want my Ford ranger (200 thousand miles on it) back.

The other morning with a bit if headwind my computer said 16.8 mpg at the end of my 60 mile trip (stayed in 5th almost all the way). Not sure the computer is always accurate, but still. I get better gas mileage in town than on the road. I just don't believe that Toyoda can't engineer a better system which gets great mileage. My front wheel drive, low slung, Lexus LS350 gets 30-35 on the road. I know they don't compare in terms of aerodynamics, but if we can send a Tesla Roadster around the sun, we should be able to get better gas mileage here on earth.

There is a huge exponential increase in wind resistance from 55-65 mph, and as you increase speed from there. Before I added weight to my truck, I could get around 25 avg tank mpg on long highway drives, going 60mph. Watch your mpg gauge. I would also have next to zero clutch slip from a stop, engaging at idle rpm (careful to not ping) with shift points at around 2k rpm, opening it up to almost WOT only when getting on highways just to get the temps up once in a while.

The Lexus isn’t even close to a reasonable comparison. Probably close to half the mass of your Tacoma. Consider the difference in tire / wheel mass and rolling resistance alone.
