New Pioneer Install, No Video on Backup Cam

Hi all, I recently installed the Pioneer NEX-1300 in my 2018 Tacoma. Everything works as expected (Carplay, Steering wheel controls, USB port, etc) except for the backup camera. When I place the truck in reverse, the Pioneer senses it and initiates the rear camera view with the parking guides, but the video is black. I've checked and rechecked my wiring, the RCA video input is in the correct port.. not sure what my next option is. Anyone have any ideas as to what I should check?

 

As a test, I reinstalled the OEM head unit and that one wont switch the camera on when the vehicle is in reverse either. This leads me to believe I may have blown a fuse. Does anyone know specifically which fuse powers the OEM rear view camera?

 

Hey OP, sorry but dont know the exact fuses but could you post photos of how your system is and your impressions of it?

 

Hope you didn’t feed 12vt to the camera. It’s a 6 volt camera

 

I used the harness provided by Crutchfield so yeah, I hope I didn't unintentionally feed 12V to the camera too.. I called them and explained how I connected everything and the guy agreed that it's connected properly.

 

What’s the model and brand harness did you get from them

 

They recommended the

$73 CRUX SWRTY-61N Radio Replacement with SWC & OE RVC Retention (for Toyota Vehicles 2012-Up)

CRUX SWRTY-61N to maintain as much as the factory features as possible, so that's what I went with. It allowed for everything to work (steering wheel controls, factory USB jack, AUX Port, etc) but the camera is inop.

 

You did also hook your red/white to purple/white on pioneer correct?

 

This is a power issue i think with the camera

 

Yes sir. Red/white to purple/white. Def seems like a power issue which is why I suspected a fuse somewhere, but can't find any reference to a fuse that controls power to the camera. Even a wiring diagram would help at this point.

 

I didn’t think there was a fuse for the camera but could be wrong. At my work I’m able to pull diagrams. You have an owners manual? Also... on the crux ( never installed 1 of those I do Pac and maestro ) I looked at the schematic and did you hook up the white to 12v and the brown to ground? ( a 24 pin harness )

And you have the correct camera rca going into the brown rca on the pioneer and then you turned on the camera on the pioneer in settings

 

I do have an owner's manual but couldn't find any reference to specific fuses or the meanings on the fuse panels. I did check anything referring to backing and they were all fine. I'm not sure about the white and brown connections that you're referring to. The crux had a 24 pin adaptor that clipped right into the factory harness. 12V was yellow for constant and red for Acc, ground was black.

 

Again, haven’t installed 1 of these ( does thousands of the brands I mentioned literally)... wouldn’t know without seeing it. This is the manual I took a pic of. Don’t know it fits it or not. Says to be rhough

 

Interesting.. absolutely no mention of that on the CRUX

SWRTY-61N) but those aren't the exact directions that I received. I still don't see mention of that white and brown cable that they describe in the first one you sent.

 

So in your pic you sent what is the black square that in part of that 24 pin harness? Looks like it ties into something

 

Yeah that’s the interface for the steering wheel controls. They’re working fine. The strange thing is when I traced the rca cable that plugs into the backup camera port on the radio, it led to the 16 pin male plug that’s meant to be used with an adaptor but since the Tacoma has the 24 pin harness I didn’t need that. I found that odd but assumed that the cables must loop back out the rear of the 16 pin and proceed on to the 24 pin. Now that I think about it those wires (in the crux harness) were brown and white.

Seems like you're getting the reverse trigger, because the radio is going into "reverse mode". But you're not getting your video signal from your camera.

I recently did an install on a mazda CX9, used a metra harness to retain the OEM Backup camera. It did the same thing, come to find out they had the signal wires reversed on their plug. Switched the 2 pins and we were able ti retain the OEM camera.
