I`ve been in the hvac full time for 15 yrs and retired still do some off and on. I live in central indiana, i still have acounts open to buy whole sale. a new 13 seer a/c unit janitrol which is goodman manufaction who also owns amana heating/cooling products I just priced a 13 seer 3 ton a/c uniy and with tax it was under $1000 at cost. You live in a 1500 sf house , if you are well insulated and have good windows , you should do fine with 90,000 -100,00 btu 90% plus funace and a 2.5 ton 13 seer a/c unit. You need duct work. Without seeing it I would have to say with al the equipment / duct work/ misc, plumbing, electrical work ect you would be looking at $8000-$9000. Shop around your area , get many estimates and research the companies . for many areas this time of year is a little slow , not cold enough for heat not hot enough for cooling. Also there are write offs for your taxes for installing newer energy star systems. Good luck. I own a 300 sf log home i heat it with a 100,000 btu 92% gas funace and I cool it with a 3 ton 13 seer a/c . I also ahve a tankless water heater and my gas budget is around 80.00 a month and my eletric bill ave., is about $90.00 on remc. Good luck! if you have any other ?`s ask! If you find someone hungery you could get it done for $6500-$7000.

x2 with his info.ive been in the hvac biz for 9 years now.i lay jobs out at 400 sq ft per ton of air.alot of companies like to do 600 sq ft per ton of air to make the price cheaper and get the job.when its 100 degrees out, your air aint doing shit.so you spent $8k-$12k for ac to use when its hot and its not working when you need it the most. spend the extra money on the better product.i love using train.in 9 years i never ever had to go back on a service call.i bet i just jinxed myself.lol make sure all the flex they use are up to code.here in jersey,we use r8 flex rating

One of the first things that MUST be done is have your/any contractor do a Manual J, Heat Load Calculation!!!! With out one you are guessing!
(I work and teach this stuff). As to size of the equipment.
I have also had my 23 year old Heat Pump changed out last month, with minor duct replacement and it cost $8,475.00. I had bids of $3,950.00 to $9,285.00 (3-ton).
The price range includes the quality of equipment and it's efficiency.
The old school practice of XXXsq. ft. per ton CAN BE WAY OFF!
I know you are wanting to save some money but it could cost you a lot later if it is done wrong at the start.

    Good Luck,

We bought a 30 year old home that didn't have central heat & air. We had a 16 seer Amana heat pump, variable speed electric air handler, and an electrostatic air cleaner (carbon filters & electronic elements), & a touch screen thermastat installed + duct for $10,000 in 2008. My wife & I pulled the electric service for it and a co-worker (electrician) made the final connection to our electrical panel. This saved $1000 (minus about $250 in materials). It was expensive, but well worth it.

Our installer was great to work with. He asked that we pay for the equipment, but he gave us a 0% loan on the remaining labor and we could pay $100/month until it was paid off. We paid it off a couple months ago-several years early, but it was a big help at the time. Ask if your installer could do something like this too if it helps.

One can NOT check out of things are working properly unless they are EPA licensed. (To put guages on to check pressures.)
I'll agree the price might be good but unless they are a person that is trained in the HVAC trade you'll only have problems.

It would be like buying our Tacos in a box and then we had to build it. (Yes that could be real fun but the truck would most likely not work  )

I am not in the business but we just had a quote for putting in AC in our home. They wanted 5K. If you are putting in heat and AC and no ducts, I would assume upwards of 8-10K. Good luck with this.
