You got the right one. Loosen the bolt behind it to take the tension off the belt. Remove the bolt in the center to take the pulley off.

 

Alrighty, I'll mess with it tomorrow, can't do anything with it tonight anyway.

Ok... quick question.

Popped my radiator today, so I guess I'm doing the Timing belt, Water pump, etc and replacing the radiator (already had a radiator cause I was planning on doing this in the next few weeks anyway)

I want to replace the fan clutch while I'm doing this (yes... I'm getting an OEM... lol)

Question is... I see one for WITH tow package and one for WITHOUT tow package. I'm leaning towards the WITH tow package because I assume it's better. Any reason that one won't work?

I have a 2002 6 cyl, auto, Prerunner, TRD.

 

If you need the two rear most crossmembers I have a set at my parents in PA.

 

On the 4 wheel drive V6 trucks, the clutch was the same as the tow package clutch. Not sure about Prerunners, though.

Why do you think your fan clutch is bad?

 

The truck has always run warm the whole 14 years I've had it.

I don't neccesarily think the clutch is bad... but since I cracked the radiator and overheated today, I am moving up my plans to replace the Waterpump, timing belt, tensioners, accesory belts, cam seals, crank seal, radiator etc to like, tomorrow... I figure while I have it all torn apart, I might as well replace the fan clutch while I'm at it.

You have to loosen the front bolt FIRST before undoing the side one. The side one is for tension and the pulley won't move if the mount bolt is sucked down.

One you have relieve the tension, remove the bolt holding the pulley on. There will be a washer and the nut. Then the whole pulley will come right off. Reverse process to go back on. Again, you can't adjust the tension with the mount bolt under torque.

 

Please tell me you are reading the true water temp with a scan gauge or similar tool.

The dash gauge is not accurate in any of our trucks.

 

When I’m putting tension back on the belt, so tightening the side bolt, how do I know when it’s tight enough?

The belt systems intimidating me for some reason.

 

I replaced this pulley a month or so ago but I’m still getting a humming noise. The new pulley definetly quieted the engine noise down but it still has a hum. Any idea what it could be guys? Doesn’t change when I turn the wheel, it’s all the time not just when the ac or def is on. Seems to only do it at idle and then goes away at higher rpms (or I can’t hear it anymore). Belts are def shot and need to be replaced soon.

Toyotas first attempt at a hybrid vehicle. There marketing department failed and it is only good for very shosh distances.

On a more serious note it's convenient to not have to hop in the truck to start it on cold days. If your clutch fails you can start in gear then rev match from there. And then there's this...

 

If you don't have it tight enough, it will squeel when ac runs.

Feel how tight the altinator belt feels by trying to twist it. Make the ac belt the same tightness.

 

I usually go for 1/8'' of deflection(belt moves about 1/8'' when you press on it.)

From there, start it up, if it squeals, at some more tension, just a turn or so and try again.

 

Yes... I'm aware of the fan support bracket. I'm ordering that too, lol. Although I have never had any squealing or any signs of that bearing being bad... at 265,000 miles, I'm gunna say fook it. The old one has to come off to replace the water pump, I'm not putting the old one back on.

Buuuut... back to the original question. Is there anything I'm not aware of, that would cause a tow package fan clutch to not work on a 2002 Prerunner, 6 cyl, auto, TRD?

 

No. As stated in that post most came with the green on and thats the one they sell for use now anyways. It'll work just fine. Though i doubt that'll drop you engine temps. What will is your new radiator.

I understand... the clutch is more preventative maint. I figure I have a lot of miles on the truck and hopefully I wont have to get at the fan pully, clutch, etc anytime again soon... so I might as well replace it while I'm in there.

At least that's my thinking on it... could be wasting 90 bucks too... lol

yup the green one I believe was with the tow package maybe, I replaced mine green one from O'Reillys But returned it for an OEM from Toyota as it was acting funny when it engaged.
Stay with OEM
