Serpentine belt

Im looking to replace my belt, can anybody recomend the continental v belt. Im trying to get rid of some noise issues

 

Changing to another brand of belt will not eliminate noise. If it does, the belt that you replaced was defective. There are countless threads here about belt/tensioner/pulley generated noises.

Let me offer some advice speaking as the father of a Toyota / Lexus Certified Service Technician. A few years ago, I replaced the belts (it has two) on my 2006 Scion xB with the best aftermarket replacement belts the local parts store had. (Remember, there are different levels of quality.) I replaced them simply because the car had 60,000 miles on it and I figured it was time.

About a week later, I started to get a light squeal that I couldn't get rid of. I stopped by the dealership where my son worked and he had me pull right into his bay where we popped the hood. He called his Team Leader over for a consultation and the first thing he said was "Aftermarket belts. Get rid of them and put some OEM Toyota belts in." I did and the problem never returned. Needless to say, I use Toyota parts whenever I can now. Just saying.

 

Thanks guys, i ordered 3 new pulleys just waiting for delivery. I read the continental poly v belt was designed to make less noise with any alignment issues.

 

BUY OEM BELT!!!

 

I replaced the 3 idler pullys <took 30 min> and that was the majority of my noise. I will also go back to an oem belt, use the aftermarket belt as a spare.

 

I'd stick with OEM: I went in for a belt change on my 07 highlander after 11 years/80k miles. It wasn't cracked but was prob stretched a bit; they wanted $90. retail for the belt plus 150 labor!!!; I talked them into a discount but on toyota disc. sites, they want 50 plus for an OEM.
For my Tacoma, I've heard Bando is the maker for Toyota belts, but really cannot be sure that quality is the same. That said i got a Bando off of Amazon as the belt on the truck is ok now at 40000miles, carrying a spare made sense for about $20.00.

I made the mistake of buying a aftermarket belt once... it lasted a year... OEM all the way now.

Use an oem belt or continental elite (formally goodyear "gatorback") nothing else. I have sold the Goodyear, now continental belts to repair shops for 18yrs. Hands down their highest praised belt.

 

OEM to the bank....I made a huge mistake going aftermarket the belt separated got behind the lower pulley cut the face of the crank seal oil everywhere what a mess....replaced seal and OEM toy belt non issue.

 

Bando is generally US made and the OEM supplier for a lot of manufacturers. It's all I use.

 

I've used Bando and Gates. Both are good and trouble-free in my cars.

@Hwf3 You didn't mention replacing the tensioner pulley. The bearing in the pulley, as well as for the others, is replaceable. The bearing size is 17X40X17.5 (ID X OD X Width), a readily available size - this size is only for the tensioner pulley; the others use a proprietary size with a 10mm ID.

 

OEM, $35, 15 minutes to install

 

I agree... solid belt, USA made and I believe it is the OEM supplier.

what problems could a properly sized belt cause? I don't mean manufactured defects, but an apple to apple comparison. if the diameter is correct, and the V-profile fits the sheaves, what else could go wrong? rubber composition? (hard or too soft?)

does bando & gates give toolbox stickers?
