    hey guys and gals.
    I have a 2006 double cab 4.6L V6 4x4

Was merging onto the freeway and lost powers to the truck ( very scary ) with kids and wife in the truck. Pedal to the metal and nothing. Then the power steering went and then my breaks ( but I think that was because the truck shut off.)

I have 140k miles on it.

I do have a little less than a quarter tank.
I can hear my fuel pump kicking in with the key in the start position.
I checked and cleaned my battery terminals.
    Checked all fuses.
No codes are popping up from the cpu.

    What do you guys think?

I just had it at the dealership for the leafs recall and propeller shaft replacement.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

    4.0l? (you said 4.6l)

    Is your gas light on?

Any chance you have a spare key with you?

And yes your power steering and brakes will be non functional with motor not running.

    So it completely died?

If so, I’m willing to bet you ran out of gas
There’s been a couple of people on here (I personally know of 2) that the fuel tank level sensor/reader in the tank got stuck at a certain level and they kept driving and ran out of fuel...
Throw a gallon or 2 of fuel in and see if she starts

Fuel is first to check, I'd add 10$ to eliminate that for sure.

My gas gauge on my 07 b3came unreliable at 150k, had to add gas based on mileage. So another vote for the above. Glad you are ok.

And my wife said it too. ‍♂️
Gonna put some in in the morning. Thanks everyone for the replies. I’ll keep ya posted.

Now that you are a member of this blessed community, know that someone would likely come to your aid in a situation like this if you post "help" in the title. Sounds like you got it towed or something, probably smart as the side of the freeway, as we know, is an unsafe place to be.

Edit, I see you joined in 2014, 3 posts as of now

I'm not sure how you track your fuel but for me I always get a full tank at the pump and reset the odometer to 0. Then when the low fuel light comes on I'll drive an additional 60 miles before I refuel. Our fuel tanks hold about 21.1 gallons and whenever I refuel I put in about 20 gallons or so. Most I've driven was 75-80 miles after the fuel light came on. So my low fuel light will come on anywhere between 280 miles to 310 miles, which means I'll fill up anywhere between 340 miles and 370 miles. Knowing my truck's range, I would fill up at around 340-350 miles if my fuel gauge were to become unreliable.

I reset the trip every fill up, usually start looking for gas around 280-300 miles in, rarely does it ever get below 1/4 tank though around home.

Thanks guys. I’ll be up early to see if I’m an idiot or not. I’m hoping I am in this case. IronPeak I had it towed from the 5 to my place once my brother came to rescue the kids and I.
He drives a dodge 1500 with the hemi ( nice tuck ) he kept saying how the dodge had to rescue the Tacoma. :crapstorm: I’ll check back in in the a.m.
    thanks again for the replies.

Did the dash lights come one before it lost power? If so, your alternator is dead or a connection to it. You can verify this by checking the voltage on the battery. If it's low then the alternator wasn't powering the battery.

Tuffruffdangerous, I've read that it's unwise to let tank get so low because fuel keeps pump cool. You might want to research that.

Got 2 gallons in it today and had to jump it. Fired right up.
    :anonymous:
But now when it’s on Theres this crazy vibration/rattle from under the truck.
Just had the propeller/drive shaft replaced by Toyota.

It seems like it is coming from the transmission where it meets he shaft.

I’m gonna bring it back to them cuz this seems like a direct link to the work they did.

Ps. Just gassed up and almost got 20 full gals in there ( never was able to put that much). I’m assuming my tank level lever is done. Just reset the odometer.

Edit: just stalled out like 3 times on the way home from gas station. When I came to a stop engine died. I’m gonna go have my battery tested.
