I believe they have to remove the driver side if it's not factory?? Correct? Extra pain in the ass for the tech.

No idea but they include it in the notes but they put it back before I leave.

    So I just leave it.

Now that is a bummer. Seems Toyota really dropped the ball (in many ways) on the 3rd gen, particularly in the powertrain. My 15' 4R crushes the Taco in so many areas. They need to align the two better like they used to in the 80-90s

My dealer installs https://apexprotectgps.com/ ( their company ) on every vehicle they sell and I opted to keep it. It's actually pretty cool. It taps the OBDII connector and leaves a pigtail to the side for diagnostics / them. I plugged in my SSP and hammer down. Couldn't be more pleased with the results.... Unplug SSP and stash to the side if and when I have to go in. I don't give 'em much credit.....

I used to own the SSP. But I will honestly say it did a good job but not a fantastic job. It wasn't enough to make me think wow this truck's powertrain feels great.

I ended up buying the OVTune and absolutely love it. The truck should have come stock with the tune.

Please drive one before making a decison if you haven't already. Its only bad on hills but as long as you gas it imo it works well.

Not sure I understand? The SSP is only bad on the hills or the Tacoma is only bad on the hills??? I already drive the Taco and it sucks...hills, flats, corners...the tranny sucks.

Assuming you mean test drive the Tacoma before buying. I got to drive mine 6 miles. On I 40 and level ground. No wind. I drove my 2013 Tacoma TSS 2wd with only 24k miles on the lot. I bought that truck two weeks earlier and loved it. But my son gave me that eye and said he liked the truck but you really need 4wd. He was right. I rode in my daughter’s 2016 SR5 but only in town. She lives in Florida. So many issues and she told me that just last week.

If I were to make a list of the pros and cons for the Taco and GM twins, the Taco would come out on top. Hands down. I took a Canyon for a long test drive a couple of weeks ago and it geared down to 7 and topped the long grade at about 2600 rpm. The Taco gears down to 4 and tops at about 3200 rpm. I am 5’9” and shrinking so I don’t have any headroom issues. My son is 6’4” and hits his head on the sunroof. (Yes, he is mine). We solve that by taking his diesel. My ONLY heartburn with the Taco is the gearing. Mine is a 2017 and has not had a single issue. It is operating as designed by Toyota.

The 2013 is still for sale. I don’t understand why. If it was a 4wd I would seriously consider buying it back.

Now I need to find a thread where members are writing about why they love their third gen. I really want to like this truck and drive it for a long time. The SSP is the best mod I have done to a vehicle ever.

So what map level does everyone prefer?

Just got the email saying mine was delivered today so I'll install when I get home. I think I want to try level 3 first to see how big of a difference it really is.

Installed a SSP on my 2018 DCORLB two weeks ago. Took 20 minutes. Test drove it using the default MAP 2. Enjoyed everything except for:

Most of my city driving is at 25MPH, 30MPH or 35MPH. At 30MPH, in 3rd gear, the engine RPM is ~2000 and tolerable. However, at 35MPH, still in 3rd gear, the slightly higher RPM drove me crazy. I am sure this is fine, but didn't like it. To me at 35MPH, the truck should be in 4th.

Drove home and programmed MAP 1. So far I am loving it.

I get 16-17 with SSP in town. I have ver 1. Haven't upgraded so, it's like map 2 on ver 2.

I didnt believe I had issues with my truck but all the reading made me think I was missing something.

I purchased both the SS & OV Tune.
I have tried the SS and didn’t notice a huge difference so I sold mine because there is nothing wrong with my truck!

I still have the OV Tune brand new in the box.. dont know if it’s worth installing???

People just have no clue how they drive...

I drove cross country Loaded up to the Grand Canyon and drive to VT often and I have to say I drives perfectly fine.

    Yes.
It uses the factory programmed shift for S1-S2/S2-S1, and is why it is not displayed.
