Norcal Spotted and BS Thread

If I wasn't busy this weekend I'd drive up there to check it out.

 

Only 25 minutes about.

 

I know i know... I'm literally at the bottom of Skyway.

 

No hurry. It's back to rain again.

 

Had almost five inches at wagstaff and clark Rd. It's still slushy rain but, rain none the less.

 

A couple rigs and myself are running MET on Sunday. We are meeting at the in n out in placerville at 9am if anyone else wants to join

 

I would love to go but I'm packing and moving. Hopefully all this weekend. I know I won't be moved to next weekend but we gotta start.

 

What kind of trails do you anticipate for this run? Just wondering if it would be appropriate for a trail newb with 2wd and near stock setup. I’ve picked up better/bigger tires since you saw my truck but otherwise it’s the same.

well what they are doing is panicky just unplowed roads so in the summer you'd probably be fine
but with the snow we've got up there i would highly suggest not taking a 2wd truck big tires only gets you so far

 

Just being honest with how much snow there is on it right now a 2wd won’t get you very far. It was pretty deep yesterday and apparently it dumped last night too

 

Get some good chains and you’ll be able to go pretty far in a 4x2.

At least far enough to get into some trouble.

In High School I took my ‘79 mustang places it had no right being as long as I had people around to pull me out when I got stuck.

 

I had a feeling that might be the case but I wasn’t sure how much snow is around still. And i’ve never been out to MET so not sure what to expect.

I’m not specifically looking for snow so I haven’nt purchased chains yet. I still need some other basics if i’m going to be out on trails but it’s hard to justify buying stuff when I don’t really go out. Vicious circle...

I still need a hi-lift, which I could almost justify for regular use. And I just saw some pictures of people using it as a come-along which is amazing and didn’t even occur to me. I wonder how much harder that is though than a geared cable puller?

 

So, have you ever considered dropping your 2wd truck and going with a 4x4? Not sure what your circumstances are, but having a 4x4 is night and day compared to having a 2wd in my opinion. I could never imagine having another 2wd truck unless I owned a business in town or something and just needed the bed/extra space. I’ve been able to go places in my 4x4’s that I could never go in a 2wd.

Absolutely, i’ve been thinking about that since I bought this truck a year ago. Even if I didn’t get heavy into off-roading I feel like I should have gotten 4wd. Lesson learned. For now though this truck suits my needs perfectly and aside from a few simple things that had to be replaced (shocks, tires, plugs) it feels like a solid, reliable truck.

At least I know I can sell this truck at some point without loosing much. And i’m learning what options I will want for the next one. I’m really happy with a camper shell but nicer options like windoors would be ideal. And if I did swap for another 2nd gen I think I would want a TRD for some of the extra features.

 

I spent about 3 years in my 2006 DCSB Prerunner, slowly growing my list of things to do. Most things were put off because I knew I'd get a DCLB 4wd. Now that I have my unicorn, the list is slowly shrinking, and my truck is slowly emerging as what I want.

 

I read through before and it does sound like a similar situation. Although you probably pushed your limits much sooner than I will. I’m thoroughly intrigued by the idea of exploring with my truck but it’s not something i’m actively making time for. For now i’m okay with making it more capable off pavement and doing light exploration on dirt roads, etc. I love that I can load up bikes, kayak, or whatever and head out for a day trip. Ultimately it is a DD that I can move shit with and that has been awesome enough for the first year.

My wife doesn’t have the childhood experiences going camping like I do and she doesn’t seem interested in the off-road exploration part yet. But I could absolutely see myself having a capable 4wd with an RTT setup and going out for stays in the wild. For now I can invest in the gear that will help me get started and just transfer it to a new truck in he future.

 

Deciding not to lift this truck took a lot of pressure out of deciding what to do with it. The suspension is pretty well dialed in now and I finally did the zip tie mod to get rid of the steering wobble. Those two things were the biggest negative factors in my first few trips out onto dirt roads (Rock Creek OHV). These new tires ride and grip so much better than the old ones, I'm really looking forward to getting out and seeing how it handles now.
