Just curious if any of you have made the switch to a 4R and had positive/negative experience? I am concerned about the loss of utility but would like the extra seating room. The purchase of a small trailer would save all the issues if I switch to the T4R...... Any thoughts?

Go drive a few and see, plenty of people here love the T4R, haven't heard any negatives about owning one.

If I didn't need the bed space I'd have one.

The seating room in the 2nd row is very useful if you carry kids or anybody, really. I find the Tacoma a little more sporty. It feels mure rugged. The 4Runner shows it’s weight a bit but the transmission is awesome. You will love it if you need more space inside. My kids love the extra space and I love that I get that extra space without having to buy a giant SUV. If you need the truck bed, a utility trailer might be the perfect compromise.

...or balanced. Yep, can be a little wobbly at times.

Is that backseat leg-room in the 4Runner really that much more than a double cab Tacoma? I saw one up close on a lot the other day (2017 I think) and it didn't really look like that much different....

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly a 1998 SR5 PU, 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
I thought about a 4Runner also and had a really nice one in the 90’s, but the 2017 towing capacity wasnt 6000lbs like on the same year Tacoma. They are definitely more older kid family friendly than the Tacoma double cabs, a lot more costly too.

Think on the trailer before you jump in.......what will be it's use, base camping? Depending on your area and terrain my trailer was sometimes a hindrance. I don't stay in one place all the time and dragging it along was really a drag. Tight trails, switchbacks getting yourself out of a situation sucked too. The trailer was cool, but it sat more than I used it due to the above.....sold it and have not regretted it since.

I made the switch a little over a month ago from a 2nd gen to a 2018 OR 4Runner. I don’t regret it at all.

I made the same switch from a 2017 Tacoma Off Road to a 2017 SR5 4Runner. Mostly for family considerations. Growing kids. Yet here we are still in the gen 3 forum. The Tacoma experience/enthusiasm is just different.

I own both, a 17 Sport Taco and a 15 T4R Trail. If you aren’t loading stuff in the bed a lot the T4R is awesome. It’s slow like the Taco but still uses the 4.0 engine. Fit and finish also feel better than my Tacoma as well but it cost 6K more.

Can't vouch for the 3rd gen but to me, the 4Runner is miles above my second gen.

The 4runner forum doesn’t have much going on. This is by far the best forum out there

As mentioned, test drive one. The knocks on them are almost always the same - they're EXTREMELY dated and get horrendous gas mileage.

With that, they are reliable, capable and look awesome. I think they also have similar resale value to the Tacoma.

That's gorgeous. If I had the cash for a well-equipped full-size I would be looking at Tundra and Titan but this interior would win me over.

3rd gen Tacoma tech is superior to the 4Runner. So is the gas mileage. 4Runner reliability is close to a sure thing. Trade offs, eh?
