hey guys pretty new here not sure if there’s a forum for this yet so sorry if there is. Looking for some help I have a pretty new 2017 TRD Pro with only 8800 miles but live up in Maine where they put down some pretty harsh chemicals on he roads in the winter. I was washing my truck today and noticed a ton of these small pin size +or- in size rust spots. The question is should I be concerned? Should I bring in back to the dealer and complain? As I feel the will just tell me it’s normal wear and tear with our roads up here. How can I fix this/ reverse it? Paint? Polish and wax? Thanks in advance! 626ABDEE-0EA9-4119-BF29-B0E02BA1CD0E.jpg

Looks like "rail rust", and is common on cars that are shipped via rail. It also can appear if you'e regularly parked near railroad tracks.

I had a white Mazda years ago, and this was visible when new. I used a clay bar, and they came right off with a little elbow grease. I do work next to a railroad track, so every year I end up needing to clay bar whatever car I own for the same reason.

I assume that' what this is judging by the picture. If it is, get a clay bar, rub it off, and follow it up with a wax.

Use some iron x , it'll take care of those spots. They definitely look like rail dust.

That’s my first thought read the warranty and it states that for corrosion it has to be through basically a hole in the truck and every time it’s driven on salted roads it’s to be wash witch would be wash it every day!!!!

FYI - You should clean it a couple times with Dawn or similar before using a clay bar. It will remove the wax before you start. You want to clay the paint rather than the wax over it.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Not really the same. See bolded part above.

This. If it comes off, it's only surface and dealer isn't going to do anything, as it can't be proven that it came on the vehicle and oxidized later. If it doesn't come off, or indicates that its coming from underneath the paint, absolutely a warranty issue.

As far as road salts go, underneath the truck is where you really need to focus on keeping clean and even treated with a product like Fluid Film.

Rail Dust seems to show up most on White Vehicles, as mentioned above get some Iron X to get it off.

It's probably sitting on top of the paint. Confirm whether it's your truck rusting or something sitting on top of the clear coat.

Hey thanks guys deffiantly rail dust had no idea there was such a thing well now I do! It was mfg in Texas from what the vin says so I’m guessing it was shipped to Maine via rail. Also should probably wait for warmer weather to clay bar and wax most likely right?

I think if it’s warm enough to wash it’s warm enough to clay. You may need to give the clay some time in your house to warm up or I’ve used warm water to soften it up in a pinch. Clay is kind of temperature sensitive. But you can make it work if you’re anxious to get those spots off. Good luck.

I once bought a white Buick Riv from a guy at work. The car had been T-boned on the drivers side. I repaired the car, and it looked great. I had buffed out the whole car after painting the left side. All of a sudden, thousands, if not millions of small rust dots showed up on all the old paint. He had had the car in the parking lot at work when they released fly ash from the smoke stack of the coal fired boiler, and that's what it did to the paint. I sold the car to a guy who used it for his work, and didn't care about the paint.

    Hope you get yours fixed.
