Sounds like the pump may be shitting out

 

40s will have that effect.

 

If so, should be an easy swap I think? I don't have to touch the rack, right? Pull the serpentine belt and swap the pump after flushing the steering fluid.

 

Worst part would be if the new one doesn't come with a pulley. Other than that just bolts right up and burp out the air.

Another thing I should mention.. would fresh fluid that's not "broken in" yet lead to it the fluid cavitating, too? I just did my routine power steering drain/fill (every 5k) 3 days before heading out to the desert and the truck barely saw any use (since I work from home) in those 3 days. I use OEM Toyota ATF (fresh red when pouring in and usually brown when I cycle out). If heat was the issue, I guess I could try a larger reservoir (both aluminum and finned, too).

I must have put in 6100 - 5112. Long weekend. Not enough sleep. Half listening to a conference call.
