You switch brands and find the proper viscosity, unless you happen to be the guy who designed this engine or are smarter than they are.

At Costco Mobil 1 0-20 goes on sale a couple times a year for 26.99 for 6 qts. I love Costco, they drain my checkings

I got the results for my truck today, I have 10k on the Truck and my oil had 5k on it. My results were average with a couple areas in the higher range, I used Valvoline because it was on sale and they said one of the additives in Valvoline mimics antifreeze but no antifreeze was found in the oil. The ending recommendation was that I could extend the change interval to 7000 miles.

Great info, thanks for sharing. I use mobil 0-20 advanced fuel economy in my Scion iM, and change every 10k. Plan to do the same in the Tacoma...I drive a lot. I already have 1500 miles on my 2018 sport. I got it 3 weeks ago. I run about 86 miles a day 6-7 days a week

Not to hijack but anybody heard of / tried this?

    http://performanceracingoils.com/xf-longlife-0w20-5-liter-jug/

    More info on the tech:

    http://performanceracingoils.com/about-nanotech/

Seems gimicky, but it sounds proven. I think what they’re using is this:

    https://www.lowerfriction.com/product-page.php?categoryID=1

    https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2821786

Considering it for my next oc.

On a side note, I tried Mobil 1 synthetic and thought my engine was a little noisier. Went back to the Toyota stuff.

So, it's better.... how much better? What is expected if we were to use that stuff.

I don't really see me switching unless there is some great hard data on what the end results would be.

Makes sense. Purely speculative at the moment for me. But I do see several business models that offer WS2 coating of gears, cranks, camshafts, etc., and that WS2 is used in space aviation. Not hard data but I find it worth paying attention to if one happens to be be interested in lubrication technology.

I'm sure there is better stuff than what I'm using, but unless it gives me a significant increase in engine life, then I don't think I'd spend the extra cash. If I had to rebuild my engine at 300K vs 310K, I'm not sure I care.... if it's 300K vs. 400K, I'm really interested!

Engine oil is just a small component of engine longevity as I'm sure you know. If you use the OEM spec with ANY brand, you will probably get to the designed life. The important component of long life is how you used the engine and how well you maintained it. If you use the best oil out there but only sporadically changed it every 25K or so, or you drove like it like a race car every day, then you will get less life obviously.
Just use the OEM spec (with any oil that meets it) and change it on schedule and drive sensibly and you will go to... who knows. I would say, as a guess, these engines have a design life of 250K before metal fatigue and bearing life come into play. That's just my guess tho.
The guys who get 500K out of an engine or longer are the ones who drove it right. Not a lot of full trailer pulling or Baja racing or off roading. Just nice interstate driving without much load. THAT is much more important than brand of oil for longevity.

Hence, my reluctance to change what I'm doing. It would have to be some really awesome stuff for me to look at changing. The testing I've done so far seems to say I'm doing the right thing.

Exactly. I use what the OEM's tell me to use. They know more than me about this application.

Thanks to the OP for updating this and making my decisions about oil change frequency easier. MUCH APPRECIATED!!

The Subaru dealership called me about my mothers car a couple weeks ago, they asked me if she was still able (at 74) to make good decisions for herself. They explained that she was in and asking for an oil change on her 2015 Outback. She purchased it new in 11/2014 and drives very little. They indicated this would be her 7th oil change since new and the car has 3,400 miles on it. I spoke with my mother and she was well aware that the car wasn't due for the service based on mileage but was instead concerned that she makes frequent 1-2 mile trips and was instead changing as a result of short trips and time. She can afford the service and it makes her feel more confident to change it every 6 months.

I think the real answer to the "How long between oil changes" question cant be answered with a simple number.... rather its an equation of your driving style, trip length and comfort level. In short do what makes you feel confident in your vehicle and works for you. I would never try to pass myself off as more informed on vehicle engineering than the engineers who created the machine but I will always change my oil at 5-7k because it makes ME feel good about my decisions.
