I keep reading through tons of others builds and I feel compelled to start one and document it for not only my own viewing pleasure, but the pleasure of others or potentially(fat chance in hell I actually sell her) the next owner.

Purchased her used from a Chevy Dealership for $23k. Already had the Ranch Hand on board. Someone traded in for a Malibu of all things.

First thing was Weathertechs as a gift from my mom since it didn't come with any floormats, just some plastic sheets.

    As she sits now:

My current design is not going to involve any fender chopping. It does have a lot more clearance than most bumpers without a chop that I've seen.

I like your plans. I built my own front bumper and have a partially built high clearance hiding under weld table waiting for its turn to be finished.

Also, it has a hidden hitch, and currently weighs 72lbs(according to solidworks mass properties anyway).

I did a little sleuthing around and found some dimensions on an old RF thread from when they started making their reinforcements. Putting my own twist on it though, something no one else has done.

I gotta pull apart the tailgate at some point and grab the bolt pattern dimensions. Lot to do. Little time to do it. Tomorrow is my wedding shower, hopefully someone was so kind as to buy me some power tools so I can finish my workbench project as well. Then at some point I need to buy a welder...stick seems to be the easiest and cheapest, but I'd love to have a TIG at some point. Shop Goals.

Wish I still had solidworks at home. Trying to coax my old college machining teacher into hooking me up with another student key. :fingerscrossed:

Edit: Just saw they had a 60 Day trial on their site. I might try that for now, I should atleast be able to 3D print some scaled down prototypes for fun in that amount of time. I need to find a good shop that will either laser cut or waterjet my parts out. I'll just redneck rig a makeshift brake press to get my angles. My friend who owns a waterjet and a brake press is charging $100 an hour and I want to find something a little cheaper. Maybe for the bumper that would be cost effective but for the tailgate reinforcement I'd need to stack like 3 or 4 sheets and make multiples and sell the rest to make it worthwhile.

If you are comfortable with trying another 3d software, you can check out sketchup. I use the free version for everything. It's not quite as powerful as solidworks.. (I used solidworks in college). But for the average DIYer like most of us, I think it's great.

I played around in sketchup but ugh, its so frustrating. I like solidworks as its add and subtract in 3d is really intuitive. I'm also certified in it. If you know of something similar?

I haven't used any 3D stuff other than sketchup and solidworks. I actually used sketchup for years before I ever took a solidworks course so I have always been more familiar with it. Your best bet may be your professor like you said

Things have been delayed. Wedding stuff going on, working on my free wood workbench, and I need to order or borrow a torx set so I can pull apart my tailgate and get some dimensions. Too many irons in the fire and not enough time to hammer them all before they cool.

I also need to pull off the rear bumper to get the dimensions for the mounting points (unless someone has the info already and wants to share :D).
I need more days in a week! Weekends fly by. :annoyed:

By the way, anyone know off the top of their head what size torx are needed for the tailgate skin?

So after some thought, and a trip to @ChadsPride 's build thread. I've decided to nix my rear bumper design. It's nearly identical to most basic bumpers and I just don't have the time or resources to build it myself. I think I'm going to follow Chadspride's lead and also get a Brute Force Standard since its nearly identical to my own design. Then I'll modify it to be my own and build my dual swing outs off of it. :pout:
