Mounting solutions for molle storage/rack within ARE Overland truck topper

Has anyone on here with an ARE Overland shell put a metal or plastic molle system for storage inside? The screenshot I have uploaded is an example of what I am referring to. Was thinking inside on the bottom of the roof of the shell since I also keep my dogs in the bed of the truck and they stick their heads out of the windows.

Haven't purchased a generic panel and just screwed it in because I don't think there's much space between the headliner and the exterior top of the shell. Dont want screw tips or bolts punching through and poking up. If anyone has done something along the lines of what I'm describing or has found a different solution that works for conveniently accessible storage (since the open part of the window for the dogs is closer to the tailgate), I would like to hear of it.

I've uploaded some photos for reference. One has the windows circled, which open for the dogs to stick their heads out, so covering that up isn't an option I want to go with, but it also means that conveniently reaching in to grab something right there isn't really possible. Which is why I was thinking the roof. In the picture of the roof, I'm pointing at the line that shows the border of the section that looks thicker than the rest of the roof. This section drops down approximately a quarter inch lower than the rest/sides of the roof. Don't think it comes down a full half-inch.

The line of bolts you can see near my hand don't go up into the roof, but rather they come down from the yakima roof rack tracks on the top exterior of the shell. I would prefer not to use these as a guideline for bolt size since they may be a bit misleading coming from the outside in, and being seated in a track that sits above the level of the shell.

 

I am looking for some way to mount stuff up there to. I remember that some one used the thule rail bolts to hook some climbing anchors to. Maybe you could use them to mount the molle panel.

 

any idea what the thread is on the roof rack bolts?

 

No I remember seeing it on one of the cap threads when I was researching a new cap. He just unbolted the inside nut and put the mount on. Don't remember if he put longer bolts in or not.

 

So I was thinking maybe angled brackets could be made to utilize those brackets coming down, because I got told that drilling into the roof itself would be a bad idea because it's fiberglass, even if I did manage to avoid drilling through to the exterior.

What I ended up doing is discovering Cali Raised (and BAMF, but I didn't order it) developed and announced molle panels that use the bed rail system. Ordered as soon as preorder became available and it's been an excellent alternative. Here's a short write up about it in the Tacoma3G forum: I'm still open to using the ceiling somehow if necessary, and if I don't get another bed panel for the opposite side of the bed or if I do get another and it gets filled up

I think he used some thing like this. http://www.climbinganchors.com.au/petzl-coeur-stainless-fixed-hanger Could use just about anything though. Add a little spacer then you would be the same height of the rest the roof.

Resurrecting an old thread I know, but I think this merits discussion and I’ve been searching all over. Since I put a pull out drawer on one side of my bed I can’t use the molle bed side panels but I want to mount something on the ceiling. The Leer Locker is sweet but expensive. So Pelican makes a removable molle panel for their cases with the hardware. I ordered 2 so I can change it out with the quick release.(

From the research I did, Leer puts Tricel Honecomb in for reinforcement...it’s just cardboard though so nothing to screw into.

So I think all I’ll need to do is attach some fur strips to the ceiling (someone mentioned Liquid Nails or I may try the 3M double sided tape) and then the screws. I’m going to try this first before putting holes in my shell. Not sure but that’s part of the fun with these projects! I’ll share here and maybe start a new thread when I’m finished.

 

I think I cracked the code on this. I used Sika adhesive (which is stronger than concrete) in the holes I drilled along with regular plastic drywall anchors. The MOLLE panel is then mounted with the included hardware and voila!
