I guarantee there are already rats in that new subdivision across the road.
Leaving rat bait under the hood doesn't "cure the problem". Rats breed 24/7, even the rat that ate your bait, haha.

meh... I like the cat idea, but they breed like crazy too, so you may have to thin the herd from time to time. We have a few hanging around out here in the country, and they do keep mice from chewing on the vehicle wiring. I don't know if a cat would take on a big rat though?
Vehicle wiring insulation is soy based these days, not oil based like it used to be. So now it's a food source.:annoyed:

Funny the cats vs rats thing.
I remember yrs ago running backhoe we were working outside an old grain factory. We heard like screaming screeching inside and were like what the hell was that. Three cats ran out with a few rats on their ass. These rats were freaking huge!! We were damm did we just see that!!

Norway rats are no joke, those guys can get huge, and they're nasty. Hence why I'm on the war-path against them.

The only draw back is they need to be paid with toys.

Had the same problem on two of my trucks but with squirrels. It amazes me that Toyota designed the opening for the fresh air system with holes in the sides of it so it appears it was supposed to have some sort of covering on it. Number crunchers must have nixed it at the last moment along with all the other stuff we should have had for the price the trucks sell for.
Went the hard mesh way also and zip tied through the holes. Also ran the Aluminium tape at the cab end. First truck had that smell and I went to an auto parts store and got something that looks like a bug bomb. You start the truck up, put the fan on and run the A/C, trip the bomb and close the door. Run it for 15 min and the thing smells like a new truck.
