I've only blown up one CV and it was a cheapo Autozone deal. It blew up in snow, so I guess it really was a POS. :/ I like that people are swapping to manual hubs, it'll make it easy to offload mine when LT parts are here haha. I have spare spindles, spare hubs, and spare flanges, but I usually only bring spare hub bodies with me on trips as well as spare OEM CVs.

I personally like Manual Hubs because it was simple to retrofit into a PreRunner. If I wanted to put in ADD it would have been a vacuum line and wiring nightmare.

If you already have ADD then keep it. Manual Hubs really go for the nostalgia factor.

no you wouldn't have. If you got a front diff with the electronic diff actuator..you'd have to run a switch and a couple tiny wires.

Be like wiring in you horns. Super easy.

Eh. I kind of like the Manual Hubs now. They look cool. Anyway both differentials I got from the 4Runner were vacuum actuated and I didn't really want to mess with VSV's.

I'm going for the Back to the Future 4x4 truck look so it just completes the look.

Well I fixed it. Pulled pressure relief assembly cleaned, reapplied gasket maker. Nothing. So I went back to the throttle body which is where the noise seemed to be coming from. Sprayed down with carb cleaner. Boom. Tightened down throttle body just a bit and noise stopped. Hit all 4 bolts just for good measure.

Nice, do you know the torque specs to those 4 long bolts? I put one of these gaskets in from LCE about a month ago after taking my TB apart to clean it (the gasket between the TB and the supercharger). I couldn't find the torque specs but haven't had any issues with leaks or anything, so I guess all's well.

So does ADD stand for non manual hubs? I’m guessing so.

Manual hubs sound like they would be a pain. I don’t know if there’s really a problem with snow getting stuck on them and freezing up making it difficult to lock them in, but I feel like it could be, Same with mud.

yup, ADD = automatic disconnecting differential, no manual hubs

I think with manual hubs, if you're going somewhere where you know or think you'll need 4x4, you just lock the hubs and leave them locked (even if you haven't shifted into 4wd). That way you just have to engage the t-case when you need to, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ah see, I just couldn’t figure out the acronym.

I sure enjoy my ADD hubs most the time then. Don’t have to get out in the cold.

Speaking of which, I could have sworn I switched my manual hubs before starting my drive across Washington state one time. Before climbing a snowy mountain pass I clicked in the tcase and went up, found out going down the otherside that I hadn't clicked in the hubs and had just gone through 4-5" sloppy snow uphill with no weight in the back of the bed. Not really sure how it was holding so well but I know why it felt sketchy trying to hold speed going downhill haha.

I just lock them in my garage before it's suppose to be nasty out and unlock them later in the week. I don't wheel so strength isn't a concern and my truck is the only functioning 4wd at my house so I'll take it lol

Both the none functioning ones are chevys so I have no experience with ADD

Speaking of CV axles and that area, how hard are the cv’s to change? Scale 1-10.
    Mine seem to be failing.

Doesn’t seem difficult but I’m nervous because I’m pretty sure the last time one was changed contributed to this :

Which I know is avoidable, be stuff happens.

On an ADD truck changing axles takes like maybe 15mins start to finish if you've done it before and the conditions are ideal. I'd budget yourself 45mins a side for the first time. It's really easy though, just need to make sure you have a socket that fits the large axle nut and that you have a couple good prybars and a mallet, anything else you encounter you'll likely have the tools for already.

My passenger side CV failed on me last weekend when I was in the snow, the inner boot (tulip) blew on the inside.

I had never changed one either but luckily someone that was with us on the trail knew how. You just need basic tools and a 35mm socket for the axle nut (and a torque wrench that can go up to 250lbs).

We did it in under 40 minutes in the snow, it was way easier than I thought it would be.

Edit: oh and prybars like @Speedytech7 mentioned, and a big fucking hammer to knock the new CV into place.

I also recommend having extra cotter pins on hand because they can break easily if they're old.

A very close relative changed it the first time when I was out of town, so I know we have the tools.

Guess I’ll go find the torque specs
