Anybody knows how to get to the other side of the fender panel marked with XXX:notsure:?
I was installing a bracket for the oil catch can and stripped one of the welded nuts :frusty:. Decided to enlarge both holes and put a thru screw with a nut on the other side but how do I get there?

Simply put i don't think you are. That looks to be boxed. You could use a hold was to cut a plug in the center to gain access but be very careful! Another option is a wing nut or something of th sort.

If the nut is still there you could just tap it out a little larger.

I don't think you will but without looking at it I can't be sure.

I remember seeing here a tacoma accident where the driver side front panel was pilled back exposing the inner fender and wheel well. Can not find it...
Looking for diagrams of the front assembly for front panel, wheel liner, front fender.

Save yourself some time and trouble. Go to your local ACE hardware or hardware store and get something called well nuts. Most places carry them as well as a metal variation of the same product.

^^^ Would not help. The original nut is still welded to the inner fender. That rubber nut is good for straight sheet metal and will not remove the nut. Best option is to put a thru screw with a nut on the other side but need access. Will tackle the problem tonight by removing partially the fender liner and see if I get access. Will poke with a wire thru the hole to see if I can tap the liner and not hit something in between.

The original nut is high strength steel (was a pain to drill it) and a self tapping screw might break the weld on the other side which will more of a headache.

Bruh, rivnut. If you can't find one to encompass the whole nut/sheet metal just step over a half inch and drill your own hole and rivnut through the sheet metal only.

I believe the fender liner will give you access. But your absolute best option since the welded nut is still there is to use a tap to put the threads back. Just pick the right tap for the hole size you just drilled.

Why not go to Lowe’s buy a 6” long piece of flat aluminum stock that you can easily drill through and use that metal fuse box bar as anchor. Extend the flat portion over the area you tried drilling in and use couple bolts with wing nuts and mount it on that. A)covers ugly drilled holes B) looks good C)take catch can off in 3 seconds when needed

After looking for pictures of crashed tacomas, I found a picture that shows the driver side inner fender. As you can see, there is open without any obstructions. To make sure I have removed the black plastic trim on top of the fender and checked for free passage. Once that was accomplished. I removed a few screws from the liner and wiggled my hand in there. Thru bolt and nut installed and bracket secured in place.

Couldn't you of just bought a tap and chased the thread?

    Finished product looks good!

I've never seen one "in the wild", but by that name, I'd think it's a can that catches oil, for some unknown reason..!!
