i've owned a '93 4x4 MT which was awesome! super jealous on that...i've owned 3 2nd GEN Off-roads AT's with 1 being 4x4 all with the 4.0 V6 now for gas mileage they suck but for fun and low end power best bang for your buck, now that i have a '18 Sport MT and i absolutely love this truck and i wouldn't go back to the 2nd GEN's...if you're used to rowing gears and want the most power you can get from these stock 3.5's and still get good gas mileage ( for a truck) and hear the motor purr i'd say look for a MT but if you're in the "i'm done shifting and just want to sit here" crowd then the AT is the way to go...both take some getting used to and more than just I should tell you that... the MT takes a little to get used to because the '93 doesn't have the RPM hang time between shifts like these do...and the AT learns your driving habits and goes from that ..if you get the chance to go on a long trip take one then the other and see which one is better to you...personally i like all the updated electronics and seat position versus the 1st and 2nd GEN's ( i guess i sit differently than most) the TSS is mainly to me so you have to much going on ( which you shouldn't be driving anyway) or for those long drives and its 2:30am and you feel drowsy but don't want to pull over (we've all done it)... every machine is bound to break wether you want it to or not, we all know that.... my .02 try it out man you never know if it'll be the next 25 yr old machine that just needs a motor....good luck man

Had a 16 Sport DC with auto 4x2. Traded for an 18 Off Road DC with auto 4x4. Both trucks were flawless. We like them both the same. We will get another.

We have had many, many cars and trucks. The Tacomas have been some of the best. We also had a 14 TRD OR DC 4x2. Only had it three months and 10k miles, but it was a great truck also.

Went today and drove the black 2018 trd pro. It’s totally a different truck than the Toyota I’ve been driving . To be honest it’s a awesome vehicle and it drove and rode good. It was a automatic and it seems fine to me and I can’t see what I’ve heard about the automatic. Maybe not enough seat time who knows. I’d like to try the 6-speed to see how it is. The only gripe I really see is you can’t raise the seat up and it’s all manual controls on a out the door tax tags price of 46,000 $$ and some change. 2018 TRD PRO BLACK.

I appreciate the comments y’all have left on this thread. It’s been some good info and actually I didn’t expect to hardly get any comments. Good group of people here.

    Thanks

Good to hear you tried one. I came from a SAS carbed 1990, compared to that it's a rocket ship. My 17 auto shifts fine after an tranny update. The crappy part is that they put highway gears in, 3.90. Should have been 4.10 or 4.30 minimum considering the nature/design of the truck. IMO the real issue with driveabilty has to do with the gas pedal. In your old truck any slight press of the pedal was more rpm. With the new truck you step on it a little and it says "are you sure"? and waits for more input. Pressing the pedal further will get the response you are looking for though. As for ECT it holds the RPM weirdly, more responsive yes but I don't care for it. Since you're asking for thoughts get the OR model not the Pro. The Pro is just a dressed up OR with an inflated price tag. For the price difference you can get lift, UCA's, rims/ tires, winch etc. Of course that's just my opinion...
