A proper replacement chipped key requires no battery as it should receive power from the coil in the steering column. Only the lower quality aftermarket replacement keys use a battery.

His is the only one I have ever seen with a battery.

My non Toyota aftermarket key doesn't have, nor need, a battery. When I looked for a key over a year ago in the several threads and dozens of posts I don't think I ever came across a key that needs a battery. I guess I'm as stupid as Jimmyh as I can't think of a reason to buy a key that needs a battery. So this dumbass is going to suggest the majority of aftermarket keys don't need a battery and you shouldn't get one that does.

The 2nd gen does have a couple of different keys. My 2015 has a "G" key. At the time I got a spare, Ace Hardware couldn't program it. So make sure you get the correct key.

I use my new battery operated key as the main key. It will still unlock the doors if the battery does go dead. I will have the spare original as a backup.

"IF" I would have known that ace hardware was going to sell me a battery operated key I would have passed. For those of you who can read, I did not find out till I got home.

There are Toyota key blanks available on ebay. It's possible to take one to locksmith and have it made and programed for your truck.
Most stealerships don't bother making keys anymore. Mine does not.

I just went through the process of getting a key with my 2006 v6. I had one grey key(valet key that should open doors and start Taco). My key was worn so it was not a proper key to copy and I needed a new black master key cut from the VIN. Walmart said they could not program it even if they could copy my existing key. Dealer prices varied from $175 to $375. If I had a working original black key the dealer prices would have all been about $175. I went to a very reputable locksmith, and he cut and programed a new black key(no battery) for $125. It took removing the lock cylinder from the door to get the code and a few trys to get it programed. Total process at the locksmith was 60 minutes.

On the subject of duplicate keys,

How many keys can be registered/programmed to the truck at one time? Is it possible to have 4 keys that will start the truck?

From the info I've gathered for my 2015 it only takes 2 keys and a valet key.

Opened my key removed the chip superglued the chip to the ring around the ignition. Then went to ace hardware had them make me a key. Dont have to worry about the chip anymore i gave 8.00 for a key at ace hardware. I went there because I wanted to go old school with a total metal key. They were the only ones that had 1. I had 1 made at wally world. But it had a plastic top. It was only 1.50. But like I said I wanted a totally metal key why i went to ace hardware.. Im trying to load a picture of where i placed the chip on the ring around the ignition. But i can't seem to figure it out yet But it does work I've had my like this for about 5 or 6 months with no problems. If i can figure out how to post pics I will

Pardon my ignorance, I've never had to do this. To get a key cut with a code, can any locksmith do that? I have two keys waiting to be cut.
