I replaced the plain steering wheel on my 2005 PreRunner with a leather wrapped one, along with audio controls to complement my updated radio and speaker install.
    I followed this excellent write-up:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/316944/

My old cover would not work with the audio controls. I was able to procure just the cover:
    http://srscover.com/product/toyota-sequoia-tundra-4runner-camry-highlander-tacoma-airbag-cover/
This is much cheaper than an airbag assembly, even a used one.

I received a new cover in fair time.

As with anything from China, it's just not quite finished- the badge must be installed. I wish I could say you simply push the prongs into the holes, but two of the prongs did not line up, so I nipped them off.
    Badge.jpg

I used a soldering iron to melt them down, simultaneously pushing the badge from the other side.
    Badge Installation.jpg

    Nice and tight

    Fits nice and proper color
    Steering Wheel.jpg

I removed the airbag at the beginning of the steering wheel install

    Here it is
    Back.jpg

The side brackets unscrew, revealing washers underneath
    Brackets Off.jpg

There are rivets top and bottom
I drilled them out with a 1/8" drill bit, then followed with a 3/16" bit to remove the top piece
    Rivets.jpg

The side of the airbag also latches into the cover.
I pried the sides back with a screwdriver while I pealed back the cover from the bottom of the airbag.
I had no idea it looked like this
    Airbag.jpg Airbag Side.jpg

Installation is easier. I set the bottom of the airbag into the cover, then pushed the top in until the sides snapped into place. Be mindful of the folds of the bag; once I had it half way in I positioned the corners of the bag inward, so not to be pinched.
I replaced the washers and screwed the brackets back on
    Assembled.jpg

3/16" rivets worked well for top and bottom

I wouldn't, rivets are stock fastener- I simply replaced them

any issues with the airbag light coming on? I actually am trying to do this with my tundra to add steering wheel controls. airbag looks identical and so does the cover. I dont want to spend $400+ on a new one if this can be done without causing any issues. looks like you got it done back in March, any issues just changing the cover? if not want did you use to remove the first screws on the brackets?

I had the standard steering wheel with no audio/bt controls and wasn't about to pay $250-$300 for a new or "used" airbag on a 13 year old tacoma. Instead I went to my local wrecking yard and compared a 2006 Camry steering wheel airbag to my standard airbag. I found the Camry airbag was an identical fit on my steering wheel. It only cost me $45 to buy the Camry Steering wheel airbag suited for controls. After the install, I have no airbag warning lights, and the OEM controls fit/operate perfectly.
