    Well damn.
I’m gonna stay optimistic but dealing with a dealer is always an adventure

Back when I had my 08 Tacoma it had a Sensor in the Spare from the Factory, but the difference is these new style sensors show the actual tire pressure whereas the old ones only turned a dummy light on after so much pressure was lost.

the center screen display will only show 4 sensors even though the system can hold 5. it wont display the reading for the sensor that doesn't have a psi rise/fall due to rotational heating. my son's camry wouldn't display psi on 4 tires cause the tire psi wouldn't rise enough during a cold snap (psi will go up 1-3 psi due to tire heating up). I had to drive it around for 20-30 mins to even get the oem tpms to register on the center display.

this is all guessing on my part from the way I have seen the system work thru 3 new Toyota vehicles that have a actual individual psi reading per tire.

But we're not looking to see what the psi is on the 5th tire unless rotated in and reset button pressed .

Exactly!! Only need it to be recognized once rotated in. In theory the reset button on the dash should accomplish this.

5th TPMS was delivered today. Have an appointment with the dealer in the morning. If they can store it then I’ll order the wheel and tire.

    More to come...

i have 4 sensors that came with my truck in the OEM wheels still that are in the winters but not coded.

I have no problem pulling one and throwing it in my 5th tire for my duratracs.

Efffff’ing lazy bazzztards at the stealership. I’m not usually a peckerhead about dealerships but this one kinda chaps my arse.

    Anyone notice something here??

So this is the SnapOn tool from a local, privately owned, tire shop with a great reputation. They were incredibly cool today in helping me grab the corresponding code for each wheel location. Spent 30+ minutes with me and didn’t charge me a dime (so I handed the young tech with the SnapOn a $20 bill for his time).

As you can see, the truck will accept a 5th with the right tool. After consulting with the guys I’m actually not going to register the 5th since the spare won’t always be in the bed, rather I’ll just remove the correct sensor with TechStream and program in the 5th sensor in the 4th spot when I do the rotation.

So in case anyone was curious. Yes it’s possible.

Oh I knew it was .I saw the 5th spot myself on techstream at the dealer.
Problem is the dealer can't confirm whether or not I can rotate that tire in.

They didn't say I can't code a 5th sensor they just don't know what it will do

So I guess the mystery is if you register 5 and do a rotation which 4 of the 5 are being displayed on the dash?
Personally I don’t care, as I just want to run 5 wheel and tire combos in rotation and not throw a bunch of lights.
Seems so simple yet very few know the answer.

Ok, so I have done some piss assin' around with these sensors as well, and I don't see why you can't run the 5th sensor and make it useable..

If you rotate in the spare, and it has a sensor, just hit the TPMS reset... Now the truck will look for tires that are spinning, or however they find their position...

If you rotate your tires, your supposed to hit this button so the proper tire is in the proper location on the info screen...

So, I know this tire position thing is valid.. Because I off set my tires pressure a bit back and forward.. And when I did the TPMS reset button, the tires with the lower psi were now on the front, and not on the back..

I hate the TPMS sensors... They are brittle, and a PITA... I made a little TPMS pressure tube thingy for my 2017... And stuck it in with the jack..

My TPMS light is off.. But no pressure is displayed at all wheels... This is all I get ---.....

The truck cannot position the sensors because they are all jammed in that tube and set to 32psi... I don't care..

    Light off dash.... Mission accomplished!

Another deciding factor for using the pressure tube trick was because I switched from the TRD OR alloys to steelies...

Alloys have different sensors than the steelies...

    Now...

Alloy sensors WILL work with the OEM steel rims from Toyota.. But they aren't quite right... The sensor is design to hug the rim, and going from alloy to steel has the sensor stuck out a but...On the inside..

Steel rim sensors flat out DON'T work with OEM alloys... The actual sensor lays to flat..

Ok. A few things to cover.

The truck will not automatically recognize an unregistered TPMS. So the 5th sensor must be programmed to the truck, however this requires removing one registered sensor and registering the 5th into the newly vacant spot. The truck will only accept 4 programmed sensors. I tried for the life of me to register all 5 at once and it will only take 4.

The truck will learn which TPMS is on which corner once they are registered, so there’s no reason to register them in order...just need to ensure the sensors for the 4 wheels on the truck are programmed to the truck. The learning process does require the reset button be pressed and a short stint above 60mph for the learning to take place.

TechStream Lite will program TPMS very easily and it takes less time to do so than removing a wheel/tire.

I’ve performed one rotation since getting the full size spare, replacing the right rear with the new spare and removing the coordinating TPMS and registering the new. I’ve also marked the TPMS registration codes on the backside of the wheel with a paint pen incase they get mixed up...cough cough dealership...
I keep a detailed Google sheet storing the sensor codes and their last position for ease of rotation and registration.

I’m due another rotation after my trip this weekend to PA.

This is a total pain in the ass. I'm going to be running a 5 wheel rotation next week but this is a total buzz kill.

It’s actually quite easy. The process of finding out was too much of a hassle but the TPMS out and TPMS in is as easy as posting in this forum.

What cable do you use? Also where did you download the software? I am about to embark on this same endeavor.

Bought the software on EBay however there is a link in the OVTune thread for a download. I’m using the cable supplied with the tune.
