hi! It’s been 2 years of dry leaves and shit piled on the wiper arms holes...

Has anyone removed the plastic piece that is under the hood that covers that area?

the cowl is pretty easy on the tacos to remove, take the wipers off (14mm) then theres a push pin (clip) on each side, remove those. then start to lift it up until you see small black plastic tabs that clip into the frame the cowl sits on. all you need to do is take a flat head screwdriver or something small to push those in to release them. once released the cowl will remove. you may need to remove the corners to get it out but those just pop in and out.If need be, I can take some pics in the morning of the removal.

I'm interested in this too as I have some ditch lights I am trying to wire in, and it might be useful to pop this cowl up.

Let me preface this comment by saying I have no idea about this.

If it catches all the leaves and pine needles etc... and you remove it, won't they just all go into the engine and possible start a fire?

Remove to clean under it, then replace, not remove it permanently.

So I did remove the cowl piece on my truck.. it wasn’t that bad.. actually I was surprised that it was so clean.. mostly dust.. of course with my ocd I had to clean the entire area...

    My 2cents:

    - DO NOT do mechanical stuff wearing khakis and nice white shirt UNLESS you just washed your truck....................

-DO NOT PULL JUST FOR PULLING IT.. I broke one tab......

-This is a pic of one tab.. is designed to be pushed lightly in and it will come loose easily.

-that plastic tab plugs here... if I remember correctly there are 4 tabs in total. Put your finger under the front edge of the cowl piece where it rest with the frame.. you will feel them.. pull up the front of the cowl and press lightly the tabs and it would not brake..
    FA5E66D0-5E1C-44CC-A59F-38E00AD0DD2F.jpg

    - forgot to take pics of the two easiest tabs that are visible on both ends of the cowl (front edge towards the fenders)

-This is the edge of the cowl that meets the windshield
    04D065C6-247A-402B-85CD-E3FC0AD1C648.jpg

Pull up the front of the cowl and the back part of it (windshield) will come loose.. no tabs..

Well, I had a tree frog crawl down into the hole where the wiper arm connects. Got in my truck this morning and saw it sitting on my wiper blade. I got out to get him off the wiper blade and he quickly crawled right down into the hole before I could catch him. Dammit!

I knew I'd need to get the whole cowl piece off in order to get the frog. I didn't want him dying in there or crawling into the fresh air intake. So, I consulted TW and found this thread.

Note to future cowl removers. Be gentle and take your time! The tabs are THIN and bend/break very easily. I broke two.

Also note- there are also THIN plastic tabs that insert under the glass (bottom of windshield). They don't "clip" into anything. They are just guides. But they bend VERY easily if you force the cowl up against the glass. Keep an eye on them and make sure they're under the bottom of the glass when reinstalling the cowl, not on top.

And the two Philips Head plastic "screws" on each end of the cowl... they aren't really screws. They're kind of like a plastic exploding rivet. They need to be gently pulled/pried out with a needle nose pliers. And don't plan on using them to reinstall. You'll need to find something new. I'll be going to the hardware store tomorrow to find a replacement. These two plastic "screws" are more important than the tabs. They really secure the ends in place and in effect are the source of pressure to get the cowl to seat tightly against the glass.

Two broken tabs, two expired plastic "screws", two hours, and I didn't find the frog.

Has anyone made an aftermarket cover/screen for the fresh air intake? I mean for sale, not a DIY solution.

So glad I decided to join this website. You guys are awesome. I have a new problem with this cowling. I believe a bird ate part of my cowl. Suspect the young Crested Kara Kara which as been around my yard for a few days now. Had to be a strong bird. Now where can a get a new one for a 2017 double cab TRD sport? Thank you for all your help.

I paid almost 600$ for the cowl up here in canada after it deformed due to a non oem windsheild that was slightly shorter in length. Had to get it from the dealer. Or wrecker.
