After encountering this same issue in rush hour traffic on the way home from work ,(CEL and limp mode) I stopped and got my codes read at the local parts store. Sure enough, P2442! Came straight to TW and read all 28 pages here in this thread! Gained a wealth of knowledge and ammo for my trip to the dealership . My CEL had cleared , but they did a diagnostic anyway. An hour later the service manger came to me and said, yep, P2442 code , about $2500.00 or so to fix. Before I could say anything in response he said Toyota would cover the replacement of all the parts at no charge, waived the diagnostic fee and put me in a 2018 Camry rental. Wow, I was kinda floored. After being blown off by ford for THEIR poor engineering when I had my f150, it gives me a little faith that I made the right decision going with Toyota! I know all your filings with NTSB and Toyota helped me in the long run and I thank you!

I wouldn't give Toyota but so much credit, they told many of us 2012 owners to go pound sound when we had the failures leaving us to fork over money for an expensive repair on lower mileage trucks. Its great they are stepping up but it should of happened from the start.

Glad they are taking care of you, hopefully you will get your truck back fairly quickly.

I did, sent all my paperwork once this broke news that they were covering. Said its like an 8week process.

Its great they are covering it now, but we shouldn't have been here in the first place. Especially since Toyota had seen the issue previously in the Tundra's.

I totally understand your frustration Alloutdrs1 , I paid out 3k to fix bad cam phasers on my f150 back in 2004, either pay or blow the engine! Even though they admitted it was a flawed design and issued a new part. Went all the way to the top with data from my f150 forum . They told me basically that if no one died, it wasn’t an issue and it was my fault for not getting the extended warranty The 1100 dollar spark plug tune up was the straw that broke the camels back . Bought a Tacoma. Even though it took 6 years to admit fault and , I admit , that’s a long time, they at least are making it right. ford just quit making the triton and moved on to the next sucker. Toyota has its issues , I was just saying thanks to all the effort the people on this forum put out and that it actually got recognized by Toyota. I thought I was screwed again until I turned here . Taco owners are pretty perserverent !

Okay, I just read this whole thread. Got the P2440 and P2442 today for the first time WITH limp. Let me see if I understand this.

I have 2012 4.0 with 109000 miles. If I am reading that letter correct, it SHOULD be covered by the warranty since it is under 150k miles. Is that right??

What should I do now? Limp into the dealership? Has anyone done this now? Did you have to pay anything? Thanks!!

You are correct. I just had this done on the 16th. I left the codes/lights on, so the dealer would see it. They had it for about an hour diagnosing. Came back saying I was right and it was the known pump/valve issue but they had to order the parts. They cleared the codes and called me when the parts came in. Zero charge.

I believe it’s covered until February of 2019 if I read through the thread right.

Unlimited mileage coverage runs through February, 2019. After that, coverage is limited to "10 years from the date of 1st use, or 150k miles, whichever comes first".

Received a letter today after submitting my info for a refund a few weeks back, no refund for me. Thanks Toyota, I submitted all my receipts, dealer warranty decline invoice, etc. I paid cash for my air valve so they will not refund, bunch of BS.

I just got limp mode for the first time last Thursday (2012 61,000 miles). I took it to Toyota and they fixed it for no charge, didn't ask to see a letter or anything. The service tech said they see this all the time on the tacos and tundras. I picked it up yesterday afternoon so hopefully I'll be good for a while

Well I got it fixed in 1 morning for free of course. Feel pretty lucky I wasnt one of the folks who fixed it on their own dime and are now trying to get refunds.

Aside from this issue, my truck has held up pretty well, knock on wood. Going to be hard to go with a full size next time I buy a truck.

Mine arrived as well. Looks like I'm covered until January 2022 which provides a great deal of piece of mind. Hopefully it grenades a month before then!
