I've got a 2009 Tacoma DC TRD Off Road I bought in 2013. I need a windshield replacement because of a 23 inch crack. I believe the previous owner must have replaced the windshield because the current windshield is an FY that does not say “Toyota” on it. Can anybody here help with these questions?

I've seen information on here about Pilkington making glass for current model year Tacomas and have verified that by checking DOT numbers at a dealer, but can anyone tell me who was making original windshields for the 2009 model year? Anybody got one they can check for the DOT number? Just kinda curious.

Toyota national customer service claims the original was green laminated with 100 percent UV protection. Green? Instead of clear? What's that about?

    My current windshield says:

    FY
    AS1 M848
    DOT-459
    SOLAR TINT
    FW2500

I know FY is Chinese maker Fujian Yanhua Glass Industry, Co. Ltd. and 459 is their DOT number and I know what “AS1” is. Can anybody here help with interpreting the rest? I'd like to know more about what I've been looking through for four years for comparison to other windshields.

The Parts Department for my local dealer says the current replacement part is 5610104021 (superseding 5610104020). They can tell me nothing about its characteristics and have failed to call back after promising to research it. Online sources describe this part number as T=5.36 and green. What is that quantity and, again, what does it mean that it's green? Would that “green” be all over the windshield or just above the AS-1 line?

Lastly, anybody got any windshield replacement experience with Amica they can relate?

Based on some reading I did elsewhere, I think "T=5.36" likely refers to the windshield thickness in millimeters. The other questions remain unanswered.

I think your best bet would be to contact someone like safelite and see if they can help you decipher it.

Today, I talked to a Safelite installer and manager, an independent installer/sole proprietor with many years of experience who does the glass work for the better body shops in town, and the manager of the body shop for a Toyota dealer. They could not agree on what it means if a windshield is "green," not even on whether this applies to the area above the AS-1 line only or the whole windshield. The Safelite installer thinks "FW" stands for "foreign windshield." He also says they are getting a lot of their windshields from FY.

It turns out FW2500 is an identification number in the National Auto Glass Specification System (NAGS), which has been around for a long time. You will find a NAGS id on aftermarket glass but not on factory glass. "FW" does stand for "Foreign Windshield." In the NAGS system, FW2500 is a replacement windshield for a 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma.

Does anyone here have any insight into differences/similarities between a windshield for a 2005-2011 Tacoma compared to a 2012-2015 Tacoma windshield? Its come up because I'm not a fan of shade bands (tinting approx. 5 inches wide above the AS-1 line). The 2005-2011 windshields apparently only come with a shade band, but the 2012-2015 windshields come with or without a shade band.

I have a 2013 and I just got a new windshield through safelite. Mine has a shade band just like stock. Don’t all cars have it?

Green means the glass has a green tinge, it’s not clear. Your current windshield is likely”green”.

I’m not sure why you are getting so specific about it. Just replace with an OEM equivilent and move on.

If you want UV protection you will have to buy a film (tint). Factory windshields aren’t 100%.

I have a 99% (I’ve not heard of 100%) UVA UVB reflective ceramic heat rejection film on my windshield (and all my windows). I have spent only a few days without the film on my new windshield and there is a world of difference in heat. And I live in the midwest not a hot state (keep in mind the current season).

If you want that quality, get a film. Worth every penny.

Btw my windshield cost $438 to replace for the cheap one. Can’t imagine what a genuine Toyota one costs.

No, they don't all have a shade band. There are Toyota (5610104040) and aftermarket (FW03434) windshields for 2012- 2015 Tacomas that do not have shade bands. Personally, I don't like a shade band in my Tacoma because I'm tall and the band bounces around uncomfortably near my line of sight of the road at night. In the daytime, the windshield looks bigger if it's not cut up with a shade band. If I need shade, I can pull down the visor.

Two Toyota dealers in my area quoted me $702.42 for the loose part 56101040021, which is the recommended windshield for my 09. It has a shade band. I have no idea if that is what they would charge a professional installer.
