Just got my truck 10k mile serviced, Tire Rotated and Balanced, running Bilstein 5100's with stock springs set at 1.1" lift, noticed the other day whenever I hit a dip I hear a loud clank like metal on metal around the front middle and right side. I don't feel it in the steering wheel or seat, just the sound. There are no leaks and everything "looks" solid. Driving is smooth, bumps are fine, its only long deep dips at a moderate speed the clank happens. I don't think any of my stock suspension is bad, only 10k miles on it. I don't want to take it to back to Toyota and sit for 3 hours, thought I'd check here first. Any ideas on what it may be?

check to see if your skidplate bolts are loose. I get a clunk every now and again.

Just discovered today that the oil change techs (that usually are awesome) forgot to put the bottom 2 bolts in based on a clunk&rattle

From my thread lurking I've seen a lot of people mention a similar noise being caused by their LCAs - maybe check that nothing is loose down there, no play in anything, etc.

For what it's worth, I had the exact same noise coming from my 1st gen any time I'd go over dips and upon swapping out my old struts I've never heard the noise ever since...

Ball joint boots all good? Although I feel like it would be more frequent.

Ball joints are still good. I removed my skid plate to look behind and it still clunked, I'll probably look again since its been a week. I haven't checked the LCA's, ill do that tonight. I hope its not my struts! Those are still new :(

Go through everything with a torque wrench and make sure everythings to spec, lot of times work gets done and some one (not pointing any fingers) forgot to torque something. This can lead to rattles and clanks or worse. Just my 2 cents.

Ahh, I never thought about going over it with a torque wrench. I just did a hand test to make sure nothing was loose.

impact gun isn't tightening something to spec. Plenty guys are lazy and just want to get your truck in and out as fast as they can

Check the cab mounts... look at your truck from behind on level surface - see if you have a lean... driver lean usually normal. Look for the bed to be slightly mis-aligned..

Some have had cab mounts cracked and beds not aligned causing the clunk... then there's that forgot to tighten skid plate thing.... I didn't know they had to touch the skid plate to change oil. My sock skid was pretty small.. now much better.

Let me know what they find!

I did go off-road recently, dumb question, but where exactly are the cab mounts? I installed a 1/4" spacer on the drivers side when I installed my shocks.

Try lightly hold your brakes through the dip. I have a similar sound and the shop foreman I rode with suspected the calipers had some play and rattle. Low and behold when I gave light brake pressure the sound did not occur

Same issue here. Dealer replaced multiple body mounts. "checked and re torqued" everything in the front end.

Sound comes from the front. Yet with chassis ears they say its the rear. Next up, Replacing rear springs and all bushing associated....

I have a case open with toyota on this as I've been dealing with it for well over a year and have been to the dealer countless times. Currently waiting on parts to show up and then ill report back after they replace the rear leafs... Which I know isn't going to do anything. But I'll take the new leafs and bushings.

Ill try that today! It's weird, I'll drive over the same dip and hear it, then come back the same way and won't.

Oof! Has it happened from the beginning or just randomly one day?

I have the same issue! I have the manual though. I think sound does not occur when I'm in gear.... Still have to test this theory more.

Was planning to wait until my 5k service interval!

i think mine was the trans crossmember. removed all my skids. tightened my body mounts (poly) and checked my ball joints and uca and lca bushings. even checked the exhaust. tightened up the crossmember last and sound hasn't been heard since.

torqued all my lugs to spec and everything in between. I'm starting to believe its the little give the brake calipers have that @barcelona7568 mentioned. I give it a slight brake and no sound.
