    Thanks for all the tips. As soon as there’s good weather on a day off I’ll try this out. Don’t have a garage though so will be doing outdoor. Also I’d be doing on a 17 with about 5k miles. I’ve never waxed it and have only taken through 1 dealership car wash. A clay bar application shouldn’t be needed right? A good wash, little touch up polish and good to go?

    I would still clay it. You would be surprised what gets embedded in new car paint during the shipping process.

    Haha. I haven't went down the coating road either. Optimum Opti-Seal every 6 months & Optimum Car Wax after every wash is my routine. I may try a coating one day though.

    Just make sure you are using light pressure & spraying a good lubricant so the clay bar glides across the paint. You don't want it to grab the paint.

    My rule is I always clay before any “buffing” motion.

    If I’m doing anything but drying the truck, it gets clayed. Which for me is twice a year. I always pull up a considerable amount of filth each time.

    Stick with a coating that is user friendly since this will be your first time. By user friendly I mean something that is forgiving during the application process and removable via a polishing compound & Dual Action Polisher if something goes wrong. A few of those have already been mentioned here. A common mistake when first using coatings is applying too much in one area which results in high spots. These are visible areas where it looks like the product is raised up above the surface you applied it to. In some extreme cases you can feel them with your finger once the product has cured fully.     You'll will get the most out of your coating by spending your time cleaning the paint and correcting/polishing before applying. As mentioned claying will remove contaminants our eyes cannot see. Spending time correcting existing scratches/swirls followed by polishing will allow your paint to look its best and the gloss effect from the coating to really stand out.

    IMHO Opti-Gloss 2.0 would be a great product for the first timer to use. It has fantastic durability and certainly leaves the paint looking "just waxed" after every wash.

    You should go for Opti-Gloss since you're already familiar with their other products. They all work together and you could still apply Opti-Seal every six months to help boost the base coat and bring out the paint's gloss. Also Optimum No-Rinse is safe to use especially with a base layer or opti-gloss and/or opti-seal.

    I just applied opti high gloss coating for the first time and it’s so easy. It’s just the prep that’s a bitch. After I did a sedan my girl wanted me to do her HONDA. I keep her CRV cherry and even that it took me 7 hours to prep and coat. I suggest doing two coats if you do opti high gloss. Considerable amount more gloss imo
