    I'm here for the memes
So I own a 2016 Taco SR5 with the 4cyl engine 4x2. The 4cyl has been great and I am actually really sad that I am going to have to leave the engine behind for the V6, but that's just because I now want to start overlanding and am in need of a 4x4 vehicle. I have decided that I want a DCLB just because of the extra room and from what I have heard and from the people who I have talked to who have had both or experience with the LB, they have not had any problems with it out on the trails. BTW (looking into getting a slightly used DCLB).

Now comes the questions of what trim to get next, I own an SR5 and its the basic interior that a tacoma can have and I honestly don't care for the navigation that the sport and trd-offroad comes with. I use my iPhone for all my mapping. As far as the entertainment system goes, I have the OEM Audio kit in my SR5 currently so I do not need the JBL sound system.

The trd sport just comes with a scooped hood, all black interior and thats it, theres nothing else to it. TRD offroad has the locking diff and crawl control which is alright and all but with what I have planned such as 4.88 gears, I could throw in a locker in the front and rear with the trd sport and SR5. From what I have heard about crawl control, it is basically just for beginners and it kind of takes the fun out of off-roading. I have been off-roading for about five years now and I just don't think the extra 3k it would be worth the locker and crawl control.

So I do believe I might just go with an SR5 or TRD-Sport for the next truck DCLB. I want to hear what you guys have to say and I am open to all suggestions. Would love to hear what you guys have done with your trucks an how you made the decision of what trim to choose. Would appreciate it if you guys took the poll^ Thanks guys.

Whatever you choose I would just buy new, a slightly used Tacoma is going to cost almost as much as new and I doubt you will find many DCLBs to pick from.

Where is the vote for SR? That’s what I’d do, if I could travel back 8 months. SR, DCSB 4x4.

Current truck is OR, DCSB 4x4. Happy with it. No regrets.

If I had the ability to do it again. AC SR, 4x, 5 speed.

The rest in suspension, lockers, tires, winch, dual battery, air and beer. Hell I’d rock the steel wheels like a champ.

If I could, I would do the SR or SR5 DCLB with the MT. MT is non-negotiable, but unfortunately those trims do not come in a MT:rolleyes:

I think I would get the 4x4 2.7L L/B and supercharge it. Not sure you cal still get crew cab L/B on a 2.7 but a used one would work too.

This. Get SR5 and mod to liking.

Best truck (for what you are wanting to do) in stock configuration is gonna be the offroad though. By a country mile.

Also, Crawl Control is definitely not just a gimmick or for rookies, it really helps when you are stuck in the shit.

Owned a 3rd Gen SR5 and now have a Sport. Personally I like the Sport better but you can't go wrong.

My vote is SR5 and put the extra money into mods. The only thing I miss having is the e-locker. Everything else is unnecessary bells and whistles.

Make sure you get that tow package for the transmission cooler, engine oil cooler, and 130 amp alternator!

Consider this, If youre going to be overlanding, there is a strng possibility that youll be in an area with little to no coverage. Having the NAV already built into your truck is a little bit of protection against that. Plus, who doesnt like hood scoops?

I don't think they make a Sport LB?? Get a manual tranny you will thank me later.

If you're doing overlanding.. get the OFf Road they may come in LB with manual (not sure). Get the OR - the Sport you will want to change the suspension...may want to do that anyway since adding a lot of weight. I have a Sport and the stock suspension was well terrible .. I had to add a bale of hay to tame it down until new suspension. Added 5100s and springs all around now it drives and feels like an OR but a little taller.

For your application and plans I'd go with the least costly trim in your picks, sr5 4x4 v6 6mt (if manual is offered)

You can download offline maps on Android Google Maps. I know it works really well on street roads. Haven't tested it out yet on the back roads. Toyota navigation isn't nearly as good as Google's. For instance, in my recent side by side through a city, Toyota tells me to turn where there is clearly not a road and Google doesn't. Google's has nearby listings handy like restaurant, gas stations. Also, you can plan out a trip on your desktop/laptop and transfer it over to your phone. The only advantage to using the head unit is a bigger display. But, if you have a big display phone that is mitigated somewhat.

I got the SR5 over the others for many reasons you stated. I didn't see a need for crawl control, I plan on adding 4.88s and a rear air locker, and will be redoing the suspension. I had no interest in getting the manual trans, so the SR5 worked perfectly for me. If I had to nitpick about things I dislike with it, I would say that the Scout GPS app is crap, and hardly ever works, but for everything I use GPS for, I much prefer my phone, laptop, or dare I say paper map.

Exactly what I am saying. I use google maps when offroading because it is honestly the best (free) solution for using maps when off-roading and planning my trips. The fact that I can still use it offline is even better. I don't mind the SR5 head unit and if I really wanted the display from the Sport and Off-road then I could switch it out.
