Hey I just joined the Tacoma world with my 2014 SR5 and was loving it until this morning. Read a similar thread here with no fix posted 3 years ago and hope some new insight will work.

Started car and found the engine rpm was high or loud and within 5 seconds the engine cutoff. Ever since then when i turn car on....
1, engine runs for 1-3 second then cut off unless i give it gas and keep it at 5000rpm.
2, when it cuts of there is a sound of something like closing in the dashboard.
3, when i turn the ignition off and to pull the key out i hear another sound coming from
    under the hood.
4, there are no obd2 codes or and no check engine light.
5, batter is new and also on a charger, was disconnected and reconnected twice

Car has 94000 mile and was serviced every 5000 miles before I got it. Hope i don't have to tow it to the dealer. Thanks

You try filling up the gas tank?

Seriously, its not uncommon for the fuel gauge to quit working, or be inaccurate.

Yeah i have half tank. Plus it runs when i rev it up to 4000rpm but dies once the foot is off the peddle.

Pinch off the hose to the vacuum brake booster and try it again.

Look for a big vacuum leak (while cleaning the throttle body)

As in.. Look for a vacuum hose that is not connected. And cleaning the tb is always a good idea anytime the battery is disconnected

solved. fuel pump resistor. these things were installed on 2013 models and up. my mechanic explained that there is a choice of two resistors for the fuel pump to use at different speeds. One was completely rotted and disconnected. The other was working that is why the car could rev at 4000rpm but not keep an idle at a low rpm. when ordering it from toyota he said they thought it was a fuel pump module that was bad but he explained no it was the fuel pump low end resistor. thanks for inputs.

Wow, good to know. Hadn’t heard this before. Where is this resistor located?

I swiped that image from another poster that was installing a hot water shower heating the water using the engine coolant...
