So, I have a rumble strip which I feel is torque converter shudder. It happens only when the transmission is up to temperature and in Drive. (If I put the shifter in 4 in will not do it). It occurs when it locks up the torque converter in 3rd and 4th gear with rpms around 1,000. I did the brake switch test and the vibration continues and the rpms do not increase. I noticed on the first page it mentions what the possible cause is if the vibration goes away but mentions nothing if it continues. If I adjust throttle (more or less) the vibration will go away. It also vibrates in both 2wd and 4wd. I have flushed the transmission with new WS fluid and added Lubeguard. At this point I am thinking I need to go in and adjust the SLU solenoid, but I am unsure if I need the Sonnax Zip Kit, Transgo Shift Kit or Ratiotek Shift kit as well (or some combo of the three). Hoping I could get some advice from you guys on where to go. Also, props to all that have contributed to this thread as there is a ton of good info here.

In the last 3,000 miles I have flushed the ATF, new spark plugs, cleaned MAF and Throttle body. Also, this past summer I replaced the carrier bearing on the driveshaft, replaced cv axles and replaced the driver side differential bearing with the bushing kit.

If you did the brake switch test and the vibration continues , chances are its not your torque converter lock up clutch causing the vibration . When you gently tap your brake pedal when you begin feeling the shudder , you are turning off the converter lock up clutch for a breif second . If you are doing the brake test correctly holding your right foot " steady on the gas " when you begin to feel the shudder and gently tap the brakes with your left foot and the vibration goes away , you have a converter lock up clutch shudder if the vibration comes back shortly after you tapped the brake pedal .

This converter lock up clutch only comes on in 4th and 5th gear ...It doesnt come on in 3rd
What rpms does this occur at 1000 ?
Warm the vehicle up in the driveway , apply the emergency brake as well as your regular brakes , put the truck in drive and do a stall test at 1000 rpm feeling for the vibe .
Allow the transmission to cool after you are finsihed by idling the truck .
If you have a vibration in the driveway , you have an engine missfire under load at 1000 rpm
There is more info here on how to perform a stall test

Did the stall test this morning and did not notice any vibration. Stall speed was about 2,450-2,500 rpm. I am going to try the brake test again later today to make sure I was doing it right. You mentioned that the converter lock up clutch only comes on in 4th and 5th, but in the article it mentioned that flex lock up occurs in 3rd as well. I think I have only tried the brake switch test with the vibration in 3rd gear. I will try it when it is in 4th gear and see what happens as the vibrations occur in both gears (only these two, 5th lockup has always been smooth with the exception of a slightly rough kick down to 4th).

Sorry for the late reply, found out I was having two issues. I had a worn out u-joint in the rear driveshaft. Currently I have a shudder in 4th gear that appears to be lock up related because if I tap the brakes it goes away for a couple seconds and then it comes back. At this point I have flushed the transmission fluid with fresh Toyota WS fluid and tried the shudder fixx with little improvement. The shudder got a little better after 20-30 miles, but it is now 500 miles later and it is still there. Any thoughts on what I should try next?

Well , the only thing you have remaining is replacing the SLU solenoid and giving it a couple turns in or compensating for the wear by replacing the wore out valving in the valve body with one of the kits .

Is it worth trying to adjust the current SLU or should I just plan on replacing it?

Sorry for the late reply .
Members are having some good success with the Ratio teck kit . I would suggest dropping the valve body and installing one of those .
Your truck is 2006 with a lift kit so I am assuming there is going to be some considerable wear inside the trans.
The higher pressures that come with kits will help your situation

So, I installed a Sonnax zip kit and the ratio Tek HD kit. The shifts are amazing now, but i am still getting the shudder. At this point I am looking at replacing the SLU and torque converter. When I dropped the pan I was surprised how clean the pan was. I did notice when looking up the part number for the OEM SLU that they updated the part number for some reason. Not sure if they made changes to the original part and obsoleted the old one or what. Also, my SLU did not have the adjustment screw on it. Looking at the new part number it does not appear to be adjustable either.

You are correct about the converter coming on in 3rd gear as part of the flex lock up feature .
The early Tundra,s didnt use third and thats where I was confused .

ROSTRA has aftermarket solenoids . I have used this company in the past . You could always try one of these instead of an expensive factory SLU

I have no converter shudder that I can sense when driving it. There is ever so slight of a shudder if i'm at a complete stop and give it as much juice as I can without spinning tires. I can't say if that shudder is in the transmission or elsewhere in the drivetrain. My believe is elsewhere though.

For those of you who beleive Lubeguard is a snake oil , I suggest you take another look .
Its, a fluid supplement that increases clamping force , longevity as well as durability . Its why I make the recomendation to use it during a transmission service as well as installing shift kits . This stuff wasnt available to the general public up until recently .It was only available to transmission shops and dealerships .
Its a quality product that does exactly what it says . Dont beleive me ? call any transmission shop and ask !
    http://www.lubegard.com/~/C-110/Transmission

This is not a transmission conditioner that swells the seals and eventually turns to acid .Once the usefull life of a transmission conditioner has depleted , it must be removed or it will destroy the rest of your transmission fluid .
Lubeguard is a fluid supplement that remains in the fluid for a reason

Here is what Lubeguard had to say .
    ---------------------------------------
    Thank you for contacting us!
Lubegard products are fully compatible with Toyota WS ATF in the Aisin Seiki A750 transmission. We have had absolutely no issues whatsoever in these transmissions.
We reached out to our contact at TransGo and we were told that there is no known issue with our products in this application.

    What Trans-go has to say
    ---------------------------
My name is John Landry and I am the Sales and Marketing Manager for TransGo. I would like to start by giving you the background story regarding Steve Younger and TransGo. Steve Younger is the son of the deceased Gil Younger, but he has NO tie what-so-ever to TransGo. Steve has been running his own company as a competitor since the early 2000’s. Our two companies do not share information, ideas nor do we discuss other companies products.

At TransGo, our staff is very considerate of the other companies in our Industry even our direct competitors. We do not belittle them or their products in anyway. Lubegard has been supplying high quality lubrication products and supplements in our Industry for decades now and many of our customers use their products on a daily basis, much like yourself.

Is it possible to get a worse transmission after oil change?
I got as new my taco 6 years ago and always serviced at same Toyota dealrship. Couple weeks ago I did the service for 96kkm and I changed transmission oil, transfer case and both differentials. Also changed spark plugs. Truck was pretty ok before except ocasional small kicks maybe from driveshaft joints (lubrication could fix it) at lower speeds with light foot on accelerator.
After oils change things started to go weird. The first drive I already felt that transmission kicks at higher speeds and once I felt a kick at 120km/h trying to lock...
Weird thing is that slowly the kicks are going away, after two weeks almost gone. But why were these kicks in the first place?
    Thanks!

We are going to remove kicks from your explanation . Thats a description used when playing soccer or football he he .

Did you replace the transmission fluid or did the dealer do it for you ?
Was the transmission pan removed when the fluid was changed or did you have a transmission flush performed without removing the transmission pan ?

Do you have a code scanner ?

Lets use " upshifting " in place of kicks
When you feel the transmission upshift into 2 gear , 3rd gear , 4th or 5th gear , what gear are you feeling rough shifting ?
    Highway speeds ?
These transmissions use a locking converter clutch that comes on to save you gas . There is a possibilty you are feeling the torque converter apply agressively . This is usually caused by improper fluid changes
