Made small progress on my 4WD swap. Got the LCAs with new Whitelines bushings and cams mounted up, along with the new/used steering rack and bushings. The steering rack was a bitch to get mounted back up with the new bushings! Still need to center it, bolt it back to the rag joint, and put in new fluids.

 

I did not watch a video, I took it apart, inserted my key filed off the brass keys that were sticking above the cylinder and put the lock back together

I did it myself. It was kindof a pain in the ass but not too bad. Biggest issue I had was getting the old nut off the top plate, which i ended up just cutting with my angle grinder. Autozone has loaner spring compressor tool that you will need, ypunjustbhave to put down a deposit on it.

Its not that bad just take your time.

Is the lifetime on a 4x4 swap with a Prerunner the same as a Tacoma with 4WD already in it? I don't want to ruin a perfectly good truck to make it 4WD when I can buy one with 4WD and it last longer than a swapped one

 

Took the trailer out for the first time camping with the gf over spring break and I’m definitely enjoying the extra space to put things in the bed of the truck and still being able to haul the yaks. However, I am feeling that I may need a re-gear soon because with kayaks, trailer, RTT and soon 35’s I won’t make it up a hill...

If you have the money to buy a new truck and don't slowly build it as you habe money then yes just buy one and save the parts that go up for sale for the rest of the guys to buy

 

Don't really have the money for a new truck, I would have to sell mine just to get a new one but I can definitely save for all the parts I would need to make it 4x4. I would be doing labor myself too.

 

I had to cut both bolts off and then drill out the bushing material and the metal ring on the leaf eyelet.
To line the eyelet back up: we lowered the diff, buddy used his foot on the shackle to push forward until lined up and then a rubber mallet for motivation.

 

4x4 swap. Absolutely.

I'm obviously biased but I had a lot of fun doing it. It's cheap and I saved a lot of money. I would rather have a truck that I'm proud of the work I did on rather than a truck that already came stock as 4x4. You have a sense of pride driving something you made possible yourself.

Even after my whole Flexplate shattering fiasco and a $1,200 shop charge somehow it was still cheaper than buying a 4x4 truck.

The ones on the right look like OEM TRD coils. Yes, they are 'progresive', notable by the upper 3-4 coils of the spring that are closer together than the rest of the coils.

I know the feeling man. When I changed my whole front end from the LCA, LBJ, the OTR, and the OME suspension it was a great feeling. I've never done transmission stuff so I'll be researching this alot more than my last repairs. This shouldnt shorten the engine life at all right? That's my main question, Im guessing it doesn't because factory made 4wd have the same lifetime with the same engine but it's just a thought that came up.

 

How soon were you thinking of doing your shock relocate?

It looks like I will be driving the truck to work on 4/3 thru 4/6 if it can wait until then. If it needs to happen sooner, I'm sure we can figure something out.
