This is what I have with the 265/75 17’s. I noticed I lost about 60 miles on a tank going up a size. I average 20-21mph. I skip 5th gear unless I’m dragging my Quads on the trailer. Setting the cruise is key. Speedo isn’t off much based on the GPS reading. Hope this clarifies things. I do plan on taking the piece off soon though.

A good friend of mine in CO who is a courier delivery driver has owned Toyota trucks his whole life, pre Tacoma (300k miles), 1st gen Tacoma (440k miles), 2nd gen (220k miles) and current 3rd gen (80k miles) yes he's driven over a million miles in Toyota trucks and I would consider him the authority when it comes to manual transmissions.

However, since he's getting older and hips and legs starting to ache, he decided to go Auto Trans on his current 3rd gen. We've texted back and forth about him taking it to dealer about the AT issues, low fluid, stuck in gears, etc. Well last night he texted and said he's trading it in for a manual trans. I'm sure me buying a mt last year helped with the decision, but I'm glad he's going back to his roots!

I've never worked on a clutch before, but from looking at one, I don't see how installing it backwards wouldn't be immediately noticeable. If not when bolting everything back together, then at least when using the pedal. I would think it just wouldn't feel right.

It was awhile ago, but I do remember it not feeling exactly right almost immediately, but was told that it being a performamce clutch that it was normal and it just needed to break in properly. I went along with that for a few days before it got so bad it couldn't be misconstrued as anything other than a problem.

My uncle drove his Toyota pickup off the lot in 1984 and has yet to replace anything from clutch to timing chain. He's at 400k+ and is the reason I went with a MT on my 2018.

My truck turned 10 this month, and recently rolled over 100k too. Clutch appears to be going strong still.

While growing up, all of my parents vehicles were manuals until I was a teenager and my mom got an automatic. I remember my dad had an old '86 Nissan pickup that he put 260k+ on the clutch before selling the truck, and when I got my first truck ('98 S-10) he taught me to drive it without being mean to the clutch. I sold that truck at 238k with the original clutch still going. Hopefully my 2018's clutch makes 200k+ too, and sounds like it's very possible given some of these stories.

So today on my truck, I had to reverse up a steep driveway. Reverse on my 18’ is stupid tall. After a couple seconds my clutch started smoking! After 2 or 3 seconds I saw and smelt the smoke and immediately stopped. Should I be worried? How long does it take for the smell to go away? I ended up having to put the truck in 4wd and engage the locker just to reverse up the driveway! Granted it is a steep driveway with slick cement, it still shouldn’t take all that work to get up it. Anyone else experience this?

Yeah the Reverse Gear Ratio is not very desirable, your clutch should be ok.

It's a tall reverse gear but you shouldn't have to smoke the clutch. I plow with my truck in reverse while plowing and never had an issue with smoking the clutch. I have to back up a steep hill on my drive after I've pushed the snow down the hill.

The smell will dissipate and the clutch will be fine.

If you had kept on smoking the clutch for 10 minutes trying to get up the driveway, you'd be in trouble. Burning the clutch for a few seconds isn't good for it but it happens to everyone at some point. It's like smoking a pack of cigarettes one night when you're drunk maybe once or twice a year, versus being a pack a day smoker. Feel the regret now but it'll be fine in the long run.

Thanks, the driveway is crazy steep. If you put your ebrake on and come to a complete stop midway, your sometimes still slide down :/ yea that’s AZ slick cement for ya lol
