So I have been doing a ton of research and looking at all of the major manufacturer's of bed racks for the tacoma. My goal is to get a rooftop tent mounted, a pretty simple goal, one that hundreds of people have accomplished. I don't need crazy mounting locations for hi-lifts, roto-packs or the like, just a tent. Where I am coming up short or most likely overthinking this is the weight on the bedsides/bed rails. I want to make sure that the rack can support the weight of myself (265) and my girlfriend (115), OR me and my brother (180), plus the weight of the tent (140ish) without flaring out the bedsides (max weight of around 585lbs on top of the rack). I know a bunch of people do this successfully, but I am a pretty heavy dude and I notice just how much the truck moves when I am crawling around the bed and that makes me nervous.

I know brute force makes a rack that looks rock solid and bolts to the bed, but it would be around $900 by the time it gets to me and thats just more than I want to spend on a roof top tent support.

I am looking at getting the BAMF RTT low pro rack and pairing it with some total chaos bed stiffeners, and I wanted to see what y'alls opinion on this setup would be? Enough to support the 585lbs and not flare out the bedsides or anything like that?

Pic of my truck for attention. 2017 Toyota Tacoma-2.jpg

I'm 360 and take my son with me so that another 115 lbs plus gear. My recommendation get a regular welded rack, preferably one that has base plates that run the full or mostly length of the rails. Not one of the designs that have three smaller plates. That way you get better epweight distribution.

Have you considered going to a local fabricator to get one made? A lot of the time it can be cheaper since the bed racks aren't all that cheap to ship...
