I think I'm going to call my local dealer to have them check my frame. Although it's fine. Can I opt to not have them undercoat it while it's There? Figure I have an 06 I better get moving. Haha

That’s where I’m at. I don’t like letting anyone touch my truck period. The few things I’ve had them do they’ve always forgot a bolt here or a nut there. And that was never anything like a complete disassembly of an entire truck. Scares me to death to let them do anything on that scale.

Reinstallation of the drop bracket doesn’t concern me, it’s just the point behind all the bullshit that they have a defective part and in no way is that my fault but it’s going to cost me once again to put the same lift on the truck twice that doesn’t have anything wrong with it nor caused any of the issues. It should be put back the way it sits with no additional cost from my pocket

As for you all talking about the coating, there’s ways to weld it without burning out the coating and if you bubble alittle on the inside of the box it won’t matter anyhow because it’s out of the elements and isn’t getting that rain and salt. That coating on the inside is the least of my worries unexposed to the weather. 85% of that inside coating will remain in tact which isn’t really needed being unexposed but just alittle added extra

Undercoat inside like where the rust spot was if I’m keeping that section of the frame. Not necessarily where I’m welding.

But for shits and giggles go ahead and and fill me in on your professional welding skills since I must not have any

Because I have to let those dealership monkeys disassemble the whole truck and we all know the kind of work we usually get back from them. Hence why we all work on our own shit

Don't look a gifthorse in the mouth, i.e. don't question the value of the gift from Toyota. The proverb refers to the practice of evaluating the age of a horse by looking at its teeth.

It’s a gift if it’s done correctly not if they leave out parts you can’t oversee and causes you more problems down the road. But I get what you’re saying. My only advantage is I can build it like a tank and it would be stronger than anything they’ll put on it. On the other hand the new frame would save me alittle work but I’m sure I still want to box it I just won’t be replacing all that I was going to with the bad frame. I did alittle hell raising at lunch with Toyota dealership again and they’re supposed to call this afternoon so we will see soon my direction I’m going

I started the thread to see pictures and gain advice like the first comment I received where they turned me onto two guys who have done the frame boxing. I wasn’t looking for a pissing match in welding skills or guys telling me to get the new frame. I lacked in explaining exactly how I planned to go about my entire build idea but no I don’t have it figured out until I get deeper into cleaning it all up and seeing if the frame is too far gone. That little hole and that bracket I posted pics from aren’t as worrisome as I’ve seen some of my friends jeeps where the only good left on their frames was the top rail. I can cut into those little sections get the rust out and fill them with weld grind them smooth and just send the thing down the road but that’s not my intent with this truck. I figure if it’s not too far gone I’ll fix the bad and beef it up plate, box, cut and replace what I need and do what I gotta do. But I really just wanted to see others who have done it, that being said sounds like 2 people have done it and the rest just get new frames

Get a cheap ass set of used stock rims and tires! Get a new frame, worry about the fucking DB lift way later.

I had my frame replaced 2 years ago and I've had no issues whatsoever and they did it in about a day and a half. Take the frame and use your skills to improve on it. It'll be a lot nicer working on a new frame. Good luck

Just a thought, you plan on disassembling your current setup to box the frame, and repair any bad sections correct?

Why not let Toyota swap the new frame and under box that sucker? I know your worried about the level of work their gonna do but if you gotta take the truck apart anyways, why not start with the free frame in better shape and double check their work as you go?

Disclaimer: I maybe missing something here as I don’t have the tools or welding skills to do a job like this. Just Asking

I’m in debate about that now with the ass chewings I’ve gotten on here but that wasn’t my original intent. I was just goin to build/fix it all. Depending on this phone call shortly from the dealership I’d say I’ll end up with the new frame and beefing it up the way I intended with out the repairs

I understand your intentions of the thread, hopefully some of the info will be helpful.
Personally, even with the extra headache of re-installing the lift, I believe you will be happier with the final product of modifying a clean frame than you would if you have to repair and modify rotten metal. Either way, good luck.

I'm one of those guys, so here's my input:

This isn't going to work out the way you think it is. Trust me. I spent an entire summer trying to fix a frame that was in better shape than yours. They rust from the inside out. What you'll find is there is nothing good to weld to. Take the new frame. Buy a set of rollers till you can get your lift reinstalled. Anything else is foolish at best.

I went so far as to build a new frame after I gave up on the rust bucket frame. That didnt work out as well as I wanted either. Before all is said and done, I may very well buy a decent stock frame from a salvage yard and start over again from scratch.

Take the frame. It's a GIFT. They've done enough of them that they know what they're doing and it'll be done right

Ha I just called the dealer they told me they only inspect frames on Tuesdays and if it's not perforated they will coat it and I will have to wait 3 days. I asked her if they could not coat it she said no they coat them all. There goes that idea. I check mine pretty regularly it's really clean plus I hit it with fluid film at least once a yr. I would hate to have to tear all my shit off the truck if it needed a new frame. I'll live with it. Like I said mines pretty clean for being a 06

Are you going to keep the truck forever? Because passing on the frame recall from Toyota is going to kill your resale value. Out of curiosity I just checked my local Craigslist, and you could get a set of wheels/tires here to drive to the dealership and back for like $100. It seems crazy to me not to take the free frame.

I’m getting it sorted out where I won’t have to get wheels, I’ve got a meeting tomorrow with the head honcho of the dealership after my bitching again today. I’m not sure what’s changed in the past year when I first had the discussion but hoping it looks to my favor.

I’ve always planned on keeping it forever. At this point 230k miles. I don’t care what you do to it resale is low. I wouldn’t pay shit or even think about buying one with that many miles. I’ve always said motor goes I’ll put a new one in it so until that point comes I’m still running it and plan to. If you read back my biggest bitch is having to pay for things twice, yeah you say big deal but it’s more of a pride thing I guess. Sooo we’ll see my options again tomorrow afternoon

Not to be an ass, but you did ask. If my frame looked like that and Toyota offered to replace it, i would thank my lucky stars and would have no other choise but to consider myself an imbecile if i didn't take them up on it,. I think this is such a no brainer that i am still not sure if the OP is busting our chops with this.
