Understood and agreed. :) The best Toyota could do is likely set so many aside by a best guess estimate. If more show up than anticipated of course there is going to be a wait. We have waited this long so another month or two is ok. I’m also glad that Toyota is going to such lengths to get this right. Unless I’m mistaken it seems everyone is walking away happy with the result and that is great news. I was supposed to get mine in this week but got tied up with the Mazda.

Why? Are people getting it worse? Too me it doesnt sound like its coming from the differential though. More like wind going over something fast enough underneath the truck to cause the noise.

The Howling Rear sounds like a Harmonic Tone, it is quite annoying and requires quite a bit of radio volume to drown out. If you have a noise that you have to turn the radio off and then listen for then you are good to go, no issue. With a wind noise you may wanna check your front control arms to see if the 3 holes are plugged.

I just need this lesbian limo to last me until the ranger has a few years under it's belt. Maybe the Tacoma will have pulled it's head out of it's ass by then and sorted out some of the basic vehicle 101 shit.

For the record: I have had 0 issues with the Outback. I've been back to the dealership twice. Once to grab a hoodie that came in (part of my negotiation/deal), and the second was for my free oil change and service.

Both were pleasant experiences and I enjoy driving my vehicle again. No howls, clunks, vibrations. It's unfair to compare because they are in different classes, but it's an overall more pleasant experience.

The Tacomas still look badass, but when my eyes start to wonder all I have to do is play that 300mhz tone on my phone to remind me of the shit show.

Edit: Ps this rubber band transmission is astronomically better than the gearbox they put in the Taco. I didn't have to buy a shift controller. It's smooth a glass as I accelerate. The link you posted is until 2015. That's when they remapped the CVTs and got rid of the fake shift points. It's possible they solved the problem?

Either way, I'll cross that bridge if I get to it.

All cars have problems. My previous Subaru Forester, which is now my wife’s car, eats up oil like crazy. Its long out of warranty - it’s a 2014, but thanks to a class action lawsuit, next week they are replacing the short block free of charge.

In other news, my DCLB makes a low howling sound I can only best describe as blowing on a glass coke bottle - very low. I can hear it even with the radio. Seems to be most prominent from 38-45 mph. It really seems like it’s coming from the right side less than the rear though - but I can’t tell. Is this the “howl”?

That sounds like the lower control arm howl, not the rear dif noise.

All goofing around aside.....it didn’t solve the issue. I told you in a past post what my in laws are going through with their lezmobile.

Point is... as others have already stated: Every car has its issues. Some major, some minor.

Our Tacoma has been trouble free. I’ve had three ram heavy duties since 1994 that I’ve put a total of over 500k miles on with literally no notable problems.

I’ve had great luck with Chevy trucks (with the exception of my wife’s Colorado). I will never touch products made by BMW/Mini or Ford.....way too many issues from direct personal experience.

Some of you are waiting with baited breath for the new ranger...we’ll, we had a fleet of recent model ford trucks that we could not keep out of the shop and on the road. They are having tranny issues along several model lines...truck and passenger car.

At the end of the day, this 200 plus page thread was about a noise. The lower control arms.....noise. Tranny logic programming gripes.....shit, everyone is bitching about shift points on almost every forum for every brand. I’ll take that every damn day of the week over catastrophic engine and tranny failures, steering wheels coming off and CO2 in the cabs.

I brought up the outback shifting issue for one reason: it proves every maker has its problems...and not one of them is more altruistic than the next.

....well, except BMW. They are fucking heartless and evil.

As a general rule of thumb I do not bitch on these forums. They are enthusiasts sites. I look at the post history of some of you and it’s page after page of the same one note gripe. It’s one thing to share knowledge of the good and bad...it’s another to incessantly come off like a one note bitch time and time again. If the damn truck has driven you to the point where you lurk on a forum day after day to complain and be bitter then maybe you ought to sell the car and move on.

...and shit, if you’ve moved on, then what’s the point of returning just to be negative? And no Kisses, this isn’t directed entirely at you.

After less than a year of owning a shitty Countryman, I dare any of you to find me bitching about what an absolute horror that thing was on any mini website. We sold it and moved on...why anyone holds on to that sort of negativity is beyond me.

Well, long story short, Toyota is trying to line up an engineer to drive my 2018 SR5. Got the call this morning from the Toyota office in Texas.

Called my shop manager and he was told by a TFS (that could be way off ha) that Toyota may extend the TSB. It sounds like they need more examples/data of non TRDs with the howl.

Hoping at the very least i can help move along a TSB for the non TRD guys like myself. We shall see if I get a call back this week to make it happen ha they did ask me my work schedule and said I’d get a loaner while they have my truck. Happy to hear all of this at the least!

Edit: Forgot to add that the shop manager said he has now applied the TSB to a few rigs now. He says on average the howl is reduced by about 80-90%. Pretty good to me!

how long has it been? some here say four to six weeks for parts to arrive - then the waiting game continues for the schedule and install date. I am 2 weeks in on the post parts order - figure early to mid April. ??

    Sorry to go off topic.

I had a 2013 Impreza that drank oil. I got pissed off and went to the dealer, who said "it's normal." I haven't carried a spare quart of oil in a car since I drove cars built in the '70s and I wasn't about to do it with a modern vehicle, so I ended up trading it in. I received letters about the lawsuit from both the law firm and Subaru, but haven't heard anything for about the last year and a half. Good luck with the new short block.

Update: Shop manager has a Toyota rep/engineer scheduled to look at my truck this Thursday afternoon as long as they have a loaner available for me (need to get to and from work ya know). Corporate office said they will make sure they have a loaner, but it may not be a Tacoma or Tundra. No biggie I can live without a truck for a day or two.

Yeah, it was “normal” until they lost in court. Now if you go in and complain about oil consumption, they run a test and if you “pass” the test, they replace the short block for free and give you a loaner for 3 or 4 days. And we are long out of warranty. 85k on the car.

Well I had a 2011 Outback Turbo, that thing blew, the turbo blew up, motor blew up, tranny blew up and I blew about $30,000 what a piece of shit. It was fast as hell when it was running, though.
