    @jp_flynavy

Im about to do your method of the 4low-trac mod and I'm curious: do you have any resistor between the 12v yellow and the yellow/black wire? Did you ever test this method out off road and confirm it's working as intended?
    thanks

No resistors installed. I have been off-roading with this set up for over a year now and it works like a charm.

Quick question regarding this mod: Before you complete this mod, from what I understand, you should be able to activate auto LSD in both 2wd and 4hi. However, not in 4L, which is what this mod allows for.

Anyways, I was playing with this option on my truck the other day trying to get up an icy driveway. I can activate LSD in 2wd with short press of button, but when I switch to 4hi, and do a short press to activate LSD, nothing happens (no LSD light). I can only do a long press and get the TRAC off symbol. Did I misunderstand something? Again, I have not completed this mod yet, I just wanted to see how well the LSD works in 4hi when spinning on a hill.

Is there anything extra to the procedure like having to be in park, or neutral to activate LSD? Maybe some trucks don't have this option?

For info on my truck its a DCLB 2010, automatic, base model.

So for those with TRD sports that have done the yellow wire mod and have noticed a big difference:

After switching to 4hi or 4lo, do you push the traction button once quickly, or for the 3 seconds, or do you not have to push the traction button at all???

There is no reason to do this on a TRD off-road tacoma. This mod simulates/mimics the A-trac mode your truck comes with (that SR5 and TRD sport trucks lack). A-trac is a more advanced and capable system than this mod. You also have a locking diff to add to the mix. Overall, your truck is very capable the way it came from the factory.

You already have trac with engine modulation in 4hi when you switch to 4lo it will in gauge automatically (4lo flashing) into trac with engine modulation press the button quickly (trac off lights up)for no engine modulation with stronger trac up to 30mph I believe when you press and hold the traction button it will turn traction control off (trac off/vsc off). Hope that helps.

I've had the original YWM for a year now. I've had some chances to get off road, and I have no brake inputs at all. It just doesn't work even with one wheel completely off the ground.

Looking back on this, I have no TRAC off light in any 2wd or 4wd mode. And when I turn the key on without starting, no dummy light. Hooked the yellow wire back up, still no TRAC light. These are the only lights I get. Pushing or holding the button only gives auto LSD and VSC OFF lights.

Does base 4x4 reg cab not even have TRAC? What am I missing?

The owners manual doesn't specifically say it is or isn't available only on certain models.

@Sandman614 @jp_flynavy, do y'all have any inputs on this?

So I’ve read 14 pages of the 38 in this post, lol. I have a couple of question that I am unsure of. I have a new to me 2010 DCSB TRD Sport 4x4. Now I am unsure if my vehicle is equipped with TRAC or not. I have the skidding car button which I am assuming is VSC. I am unclear if that is the same as TRAC or if TRAC is a different option that I may not have. My last truck was a 2002 TRD OR and I had the good old LRD, which I loved. But am not familiar with the upgrades Toyota has made to their 4WD systems. Thanks and sorry about the long post!

Is that blue plastic clip on the top left a piercing wire tap?
Is that where the pc-9 wire is running into the 12v source?

Attempted the modified version of the
yellow wire mod tonight. My 4lo light still flashes at me as if I had only done the original ywm. Can anyone tell from my attached photo what I did wrong here?? Thanks guys.

Since your doing the new mod, you need to reconnect the old mod you have marked as ywm. Make sure pc-9 is connected to a switched +12 source, and a 100 ohm resistor is recommended.

Is there another thread that clearly explains and has a lot of photos of the modified YWM the one later in the thread supply +12)? Are there others (looking for a larger sample size) that have done this and field tested it off road?

Itching to do this, but it is not clear enough to me YET. I do love seeing the evolution of mods though.

I've browsed through this thread with no luck, I have a 2008 sport manual 6spd. No trac button. Will this mod benefit me at all?

My SR5 only has auto-LSD and VSC-off. No Trac lights at all. So I would assume the YWM would not do anything for us.

So I just did this mod & want to make sure I understand the driving modes & when I should use them. I did not install a switch. I just cut the PC-9 wire at the plug & spliced it to the thicc yellow 12V with a 100ohm resistor along the way.

Running a 2014 TRD Sport 4x4. "Press" means pressing the squiggly tires button.

    1) H2 - No Press - 2WD, Auto Braking ON, Engine modulation ON - 90% of driving situations

    2) H2 - Short Press (TRAC OFF and AUTO LSD illuminated) - Auto Braking ON, Engine modulation OFF - Maybe I'm a lil bit stuck & too lazy to switch to 4wd?

    3) H2 - Long Press (TRAC OFF and squiggly tires both illuminated) - Auto Braking OFF, Engine modulation OFF - Acting like an idiot in a wet parking lot or wide open dirt roads.

    4) H4 - No Press (Nothing illuminated) - 4WD High, Auto Braking ON, Engine modulation ON - Paved road driving in snowy/slushy conditions?

    5) H4 - Short Press (TRAC OFF illuminated) - 4WD High, Auto Braking ON, engine modulation OFF - Paved road driving in snowy/slushy conditions, but maybe I'm having to climb a hill?

    6) H4 - Long Press (TRAC OFF and squiggly both illuminated) - 4WD High, Auto Braking & Engine modulation both OFF - Not sure when I would use this...

    7) L4 - No Press (nothing illuminated) - Auto Braking & engine modulation both ON - This is the desired outcome of this mod, correct? This mode mimics ATRAC, and I should be able to move the vehicle if only one tire has traction, correct? This mode is used only when I really get myself in trouble?

    8) L4 - Short Press (TRAC OFF illuminated) - Auto Braking ON, engine modulation OFF -...or is THIS the desired outcome/ATRAC mimic? This mode enables individual wheel braking when slip is detected, but does not modulate engine output, correct? So this is the mode I may want to use when I'm crawling across sand or through mud?

    9) L4 - Long Press (TRAC OFF and squiggly both illuminated) - Auto Braking & engine modulation both OFF - This is the factory configuration for this truck, where I'm basically screwed if one rear & one front wheel have no traction? Why would I want to use this configuration after the improved YWM?

Sorry if I got anything wrong here, and also sorry if I seem ignorant.

Also, I notice the AUTO LSD light does not stay on in 4WD. Is it only supposed to blink on when it's working? I'm not sure I fully understand this one.

    Thanks!

Auto LSD is only available in H2: it mimics a limited slip differential: When one rear tire spins from a loss of traction, braking force is then applied, this allows the non spinning tire to rotate. (Hopefully that tire has traction and can get you unstuck).
It seems like you understand everything else just fine.
It all seems counter intuitive at first.. Normally in a 4x4 you press buttons to get yourself unstuck.. ie a locker. Not to make your differentials open haha

SR5's still have TRAC OFF - but keep in mind you would only be able to trigger this in H4 (and L4 after you do this mod), not in H2.
