I am so curious if anyone has noticed this but me.
The 2005 Tacoma has the same cab lines, doors, windows and roof as a 2018 Tacoma. I am not referring new structure of cab exterior but appearance.
It seems like everything is all new except this part of the truck. Kind of seems like Toyota took a shortcut and you can't really call it all new but only partially new? Not trying to be negative or create any issues.
I would just really appreciate some feedback on the subject.
For example if I took the door off a 2005 Tocoma and put it on a 2018 Tacoma and it fit perfectly it would prove that part wasn't changed or redesigned and I have never see a new generation not be fully changed before. I have always been excited in the past when a new generation comes out because the look is usually 100 percent different and I wait for that before I buy a new one.

I believe the Cab is the same dimension wise but they used more high strength Steel for the 3rd Gen.

I believe it's correct to say the cab frame hasn't really changed much.

Would have to agree, the lines around the rear doors look like my 06. I always notice after washing it and drying the jams out.

Yes, I read that as well. Besides, if it ain’t broke....

If saving some $$ on retooling allows for better steel or some other upgrade, while keeping costs down, I’m all for it

Exactly, the High strength Steel makes for a safer truck!

I believe you get 1 more inch of space in the back seat.

Appearance wise all body panels are different except for the windows and maybe the roof. The door panels are completely different.

It seems that perhaps the article means that it is a first for a Toyota truck and first for Toyota in North America.

That highest strength steel that is designated red in the chart is used in just the pillars and a portion of roof rail on the Tacoma.

As there are many levels of high strength steel, Ford says that they were using 1300 MPa steel back in 2015.

The Tacoma has a 4 star crash rating, which is good. Other trucks have a 5 star rating.

    There’s always room for improvement!

Maybe on the 4th Gen, or possibly sooner, as crash requirements and ratings are revised over time.
