What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I’ve seen some really pretty Jeeps around town with very expensive suspension setups that have never left pavement.

There’s also plenty of guys that want to hit some trails but can’t afford the nice setups, or have to budget for them, and settle for Bilsteins.

 

yea nothing wrong with settling with them. as of jeeps i see loads of them around Purdue college. either with mall crawler lifts or stock with bigger rims and loads of lights.

I was on team 5100/ebiach. Did fine...till they had no oil left and the springs wouldn't hold up my truck as much.

Then long travel.

yea, im looking at the same kit you got monte and im surprised at the price difference and build quality. im probably going to get the same coils as you 600lbs x 18 inches i do believe?

Well add another 1500 i think for the ADS shocks.

I have 16'' 700lb coils right now for my heavy pig. Works great. But i know @ponethousand had 18x600lbs. Once he took all the preload out it worked good. I wouldn't mind trying them when I need new ones.

You'll want 0 preload with an 18'' long coil.

If i could have afforded it back then, I think I would go with Solo's kit with a fabbed spindle. Or Camburgs kits with solos spindle. Camburg uses heim joints at the LCA mounts which takes stress off the came tabs and helps keep your alignment.

Either way I love my current kit and will be adding solo spindles to it anyways. Matt is a great guy and makes stellar stuff.

 

Yea I love my camburg ucas but you'd be spending $5k for the whole setup. Coilovers with cv's

 

Pretty much 5k for any basic LT setup.

Most LT kits are 2-2.5k
Shocks 1500
CVs if you buy them modified 500-800
Front fenders 500

 

Just looked at mcm it's like $4,300 with out hydros and that's with cv's and ads coilovers. But yea fenders are the biggest negative for me. But that's just me cause I'm weird lol. As of the rear I'm guessing to be spending between 2-3 grand but I have to get custom leaf springs

 

yeah and then theres gussets and bracing.

For him, for the average person probably not, unless you have money to burn. I think OEM replacement and Ucas are good enough for most people, maybe even a little over kill, in my opinion.

But I guess if you’re putting a tundra engine in your truck you aren’t the average person.

 

Very true that engine will probably be after the armor, suspension and diffs with lockers. But she's definitely going in the truck. I just dropped it off at the Dyno yesterday, they think the engine is overkill for a Tacoma. But I did get the engine for free so why wouldn't I put it in the Tacoma

 

New FN Five Star with 285/75 16 Falken Wildpeak AT3 mounted and on the truck today. Gotta weld the Bamf sliders on next.

 

My problem I am having now is I look at a LT kit and see people 3 link up front for less than an LT kit. Of course this is with doing all the part sourcing and fabrication themselves though. Really makes me rethink my ultimate goal being LT. But I haven't driven a 3 link truck or a LT truck so I have no way to directly compare the two. But I have seen well done 3-links soak up terrain pretty well at speed. Still undecided where I will end up ultimately. At this point just a well dialed in MT setup will be leaps and bounds better for me for the days I would be spending 6-8 hours off road trying to cover a ton of ground.

 

just depends on your wants from the truck I think. Both can work well enough in all situations. But its when you split hairs that they differ.

Driving style and what you use the truck for are the biggest factors here. Followed by personal preference.

 

This is true. Because one will definitely crawl and articulate much much better, and the other will likely be able to go much much faster for longer periods.

Ssshhh don't give away the reason why I'm doing all this work lol. No in all seriousness I want to overland the baja 1000. Do I need a V8 and Full LT no I don't. But it's a goal I've set myself up to and I aim to do it

 

I don't know about faster for longer..but potentially more stable.
