Corolla startup issue

Hey everyone, I know this isn't a Tacoma issue but I thought I might as well ask here. I sold my '10 Corolla with 147k miles to my brother before I bought this truck, and it was perfectly fine while I had it. About a month after he started driving it it started making a grinding sound every once in a while when the engine is cold and he turns it on. It only lasts for about 1/2-3/4 of a second I would say, and doesn't affect the startup, but he's a little worried about it causing issues down the road. What do you guys think it could be? it the stater. i work at a dealer and all of them do it when cold. replace it
