Toyota dropped the mechanical LSD diff in 2009 after just 4 years on the Sport TRD. Replacing brakes is far cheaper than rebuilding differentials, right?

Ok, I don't know how that one works if no clutches. Toyota factory products is what I have input on.

it works by using internal worm gears to create friction between the three worm gears and the side gear. Once there is enough friction, IE one free spinning wheel, it takes little more than one rotation to transfer power to the opposing wheel pct_470927.jpg

So would the Eaton Tru Trac out last the factory LSD?

That would be my guess? It seems like its a significantly stronger unit internally, and I would think that it would last longer. I would certainly think it can take more abuse than the factory diff as well as handle putting power down wayyyyy better in case they ever come out with a S/C or other big power adders, or if/when people start doing LS, 2JZ, etc etc swaps into the third gen

If it's better than stock it's a no brainer because it less than half the price of OEM. I would just like to know if there is a down side. It seems like everything in life is a bit of a trade off. The stock LSD lasted 11 years now and I've towed some big loads. I just don't want something that will be fussy or loud.

I believe it is supposed to operate silently, and also trutracs have an excellent industry reputation for longevity and good performance in the conditions they are designed for. If you get stuck with a wheel in the air and severely off camber then chances are you're still stuck where a true locker might pull you out, the trade off is that on road performance of any kind is increased thanks to more traction, power to both wheels, and ability to torque bias while cornering. Versus the stock unit, however, there is virtually no comparison. It is more robust than the stock open diff and should outlast it, and it being an actual mechanical lsd, it reacts to torque inputs much more quickly (within less than 1/4 of one turn of the axle), whereas the mechanical lsd system we have does a decent job of helping around corners, this will be even better and more responsive. That all being said, it isn't yet available for 2017 models and apparently can only be used on certain 2016s that have carried over second gen axle parts. Should be fixed within a year I'd think at this point though, eaton knows the Tacoma market will make up a substantial part of their sales.

Your only problem is that you are in too much of a hurry. Ease up on the fast pedal and it won't spin out.

LOL... Thats certainly one solution  Could also try some grippier all season SUV tires, took care of all but the most heavily throttle-induced wheelspin for me. That being said, controlling power is definitely an issue for the stock differential. The trutrac would be far more effective in controlling wheelspins under power, absolutely no comparison. You would still be able to takeoff under full throttle, unlike with the stock diff which will let you sit in a spot and spin 1 wheel all day at full power. Drifting would be much more controllable and the truck would be more effective at drifting for those who like to slide their rear-ends around lol.

I need to jack this thread. I've tried a search with no results. It is relevant though

I need to fix my rear end. And at the moment it seems easier/cheaper/faster to swap the whole rear end. Does anyone know if the mechanical lsd rear end is compatible with my trucks auto LSD?

I don't think it would be but I found a deal on an entire mechanical lsd rear end from an 05 to put in my 2013 tacoma if someone says it works

I'm thinking it would work if I disconnect my abs but I don't want to do that.

You wouldn't need to disconnect ABS........
But it may kick in different.. Traction control will kick in less with limited slip. My FRS has limited slip and feels the same as the truck.
Just test run it in a snowy parking lot to make sure.....

    HELP!
I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4 x 4 MT with A factory rear locker. I want to put red line oil in the transfer case and both front and rear differentials. I just change the manual 6 speed transmission with MT-90. What redline gear oil do I put in the front and rear differentials and transfer case? A guy at Napa sold me a limited slip oil. See photo... I thought with a OEM rear locker you use Redline 75w90 non-slip. Now I am all confused on what to put in the transfer case and both front and rear differentials? Thank you for any advice..

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Use what your owner's manual recommends.

And no need for fancy boutique lubricant. OTC of the right GL and viscosity will do just fine.

Don't have an owners manual? Toyota's website will let you have a PDF version for free!

Go to the Redline website and look it up. It will probably be a GL-5 or GL-4 depending on your differentials.
