Hello all. I got some new rims and tires and when I did the swap saw my drums are pretty rusted. 2005 Taco. 130,000 miles. PA truck. Brakes working well otherwise. Parking brake works fine as well. Is it ok to put new drums on old shoes? I assume I'd have to rough up the shoes a bit and also move the star bit 15-20 clicks, maybe even more to allow room for the new drums. Has anyone done this or would it be better to sand the rust off the old drums and use them again? Thanks in advance.

I would just scuff up the old ones and spray them black, or any color you like. Unless they are worn out, they should be fine.

Drums are thick. It would take a long long while for them to rust enough to be unusable. I would scuff and treat with an acidic rust inhibitor, then paint it

No major issues doing it? As long as they slide over easily?

Why? Go ahead and do everything if you're replacing drums or leave them alone and keep the drums until you need rear brakes.

Why? To keep rust from getting to new rust free rims. Old ones were corroded.

As I noted the rears work great. Wanted to know if it would work for aesthetics.

So I did this today. Glad I did. Everything was shot, not just the drums. Cracked pads on 1 side and missing pin on the other. Word to the wise. If you live anywhere they salt more than 7 days a year, bettah check yours at 100k miles. Mine were just shy of 130k. They were so bad that when I tried to pry them off the rim of the drum just flaked into pieces. It's not just about pad thickness.IMG_20180420_104812.jpg IMG_20180420_104730.jpg IMG_20180420_104719.jpg

Replaced all the springs too. Star adjusters & cylinders were good, but if there is a next time, will do them too.

Paint the new drums, to keep the rust at bay.

Drums and shoes and springs and maybe cylinders are on my list this summer. Don’t believe the posts that say ‘back in my day I used to get 150k miles or whatever’ mileage without touching the rear stock brakes, without issues. It is misinformation. Maybe the truck still stops safely but it’s not a very pleasant driving experience during most stops.

My front brake job last summer (75k miles) on this truck was the first time ignoring the rears on any vehicle (following that guidance) I’ve ever done, and it’s also the first time I had brake-feel issues start to occur in the rear. I’ll stick with complete brake jobs from now on for this truck just like any other vehicle I personally would drive.

Agree with @mbrogz3000 the truck was braking "fine", but without a pin in the front shoe it was waiting for disaster. It had apparently rusted and fell out somewhere along the line. As they say ignorance is bliss. Would definitely check them at certain intervals. Even if they brake fine. I'm really glad I did. Appreciate all advice on this thread.
