May be a dumb question but how do you clean the pump between the manual fluid and differential?

I had a neck sprain and a cold when I had mine done two weeks ago. The master tech who did it just pumped out the excess fluid and used the same 6 buck hand pump for all, trans, diffs, and transfer case.

A small amount of slightly different viscosity gear oil mixed in probably isn’t going to damage anything,
    if that’s what they did.

You could buy a second and third 6 dollar hand pump for different viscosity fluids.

One can’t have too many hand pumps.

    Lol.

Also, is it me (my nose?), or does today's gear oil not smell as bad as it used to? I've done a diff oil job on a newer Subaru and remember that stuff stinking to high heaven. The oil I put in my Tacoma was relatively mild, by comparison.

I do think the older gear oils had alot more Sulfur or something else that really gave off more odor than the newer ones.

Nice write-up. I have an AT and changed my rear diff fluid with 75W-90 Mobile 1 Syn. Funny thing is, after driving a bit it seems like I am getting slightly worse mileage (1-2mpg). Any thoughts?
Also, I put 75W-90 genuine toyota diff fluid in the transfer case since transfer case fluid in a straight 75W is practically non-existent. Any thoughts?

DO NOT use syn-blend with the rear diff locker or limited slip, only full-syn.

Where did you get the 85W from? It says 75W-85 right in the manual

I used 75W-90 Mobile 1 syn for the rear diff, how is what you mentioned thinner?

Here’s another synthetic option for the transfer case. The Toyota spec that it meets is listed on the bottle. I paid about $12.00. Amazon had it recently for about $15.00.

Slow in responding. Too funny in that my experience with Amsoil is just the opposite. I had to shift from 1st to 3rd on cold mornings as it absolutely would NOT go into 2nd gear (with petroleum lube in the gearbox). Switched to Amsoil and immediately I could shift into 2nd gear with only two fingers on the lever! The car was in a '73 Mazda RX3-SP and it was in 1979. Been using Amsoil exclusively ever since (39 years!). Exclusively that is except for the transfer case since there isn't an Amsoil equivalent available. (The RX3 made to 285k miles before it was stolen. Amsoil in it for 250k of the 285k.)

The best manual transmission fluid is GM Synchromesh.. Make the oldest and shittiest transmissions shift like butter..

Formulated for S10 pickups with a "problematic" Manual transmission in the late 80's early 90's, this fluid was designed to make the S10's shift smoother and not hang up during shifts..

I've run it Hondas, Ford, Toyota's...

Research it... Amazing stuff.. And lasts forever...

There are 2 types... you need the WHITE bottle..friction modified..

To be honest, I believe most dealers do what you did. I’m just going to eat the cost on Toyota fluid when the time comes since I feel that it’s the “right” move for our transfer case. There’s a reason Toyota spec’d an odd fluid for the t-case and I’m not in a position to intelligently question it.

Ravenol has come up multiple times but information on their fluid is limited at best. The Toyota cost is absurd but it’s the only choice I feel comfortable with. I’m halfway hoping someone uses magnuson-moss to make Toyota offer up the t-case fluid for free or a discounted rate.

Toyota manual says use a 75w85 gl5 gear oil in the front and rear diff, and a 75w90 gl 5 in the transfer case.
a personal observation is the 75w85 oil is very thin like water compared to the mobil1 75w90 oil is like syrup when I did my 30k gear oil change.i used Redline 75w85 gl5 in the rear diff and 75w90 in the transfer and front diff and noticed how much thicker the 75w90 is compared to the 75w85. that's probably why u lost 1-2 mpgs

Cool, thanks. For the record, the manual does NOT say 75W-90 for the T-case. It says straight 75W, which is different. I did use genuine Toyota 75W-90 for the T-case because the straight 75W T-case fluid is $60 F*** that! However, I am probably going to switch to the 75-85W fluid for the rear diff (Redline's)

The reason Toyota made the only 75W and high cost is due to the patent they have on it for the next 1-2yrs....bastards
