I have a 2017 TRD OR MT and have been having an odd issue. Every time I use 4 low, A-TRAC, and sometimes locker on a trail etc then get back on the road... I have a severe vibration in the entire truck when coming to a stop in 2wd. It feels like driving over pot holes. It ONLY does this after wheeling and using the above systems. It usually clears up after a few days, but this time it's really bad. I'm guessing it's a brake issue, since it's intermittent .I'm wondering if A-TRAC is heating the hell out of the brakes since it uses ABS to limit wheel spin. I'm about to schedule an appointment to get it looked at. Any precedent for this issue?

A lot of folks, me included, had issues with warped rear drums but that would be more consistent and wouldn't "go away" after a couple of days. Interested to hear what you get from the dealership though

Ive been having a vibration issue since i bought my truck new. I have 8k miles on it and I've had the issue addressed at the dealership (said the rear drums were warped) I'm going to have it looked at again when i go in for the 10k appt.

I have 10k miles. This only happens after wheeling. This isn't an "always" thing. I'm a technician as well, it's not often I can't fix my own vehicle. This one has me stumped. The only things I contemplated were the front diff bearings doing something wild, brake pad deposit issues, or axle wrap. The only one of those that can get better would be the junk on the brakes getting cleaned off with enough normal street driving.

I'm wondering if A-TRAC gets the brakes nice and hot when I'm getting on it, then sitting with the park brake on when I'm stopped for awhile is leaving pad material on the drums. Especially if they're wet when I do.

did they replace your drum(s) under warranty? they did on mine - the only thing they did FIX for me aside from the TSB for the ECU update

Nope, they just had them turned. I’m going to see if they’ll replace them for me at 10k though. Did it fix your vibs?
    Sorry to thread jack btw

Are there any other grease monkeys here with some ideas? I turn wrenches on big things. Some stuff is the same, a lot isn't. So anything helps. I don't usually go to the dealer.

Apparently this phenomenon has a name... Brake judder. I found a video of exactly what my truck does. I've never had this problem in all my years of driving on and offroad. Even trucks on 40"+ tires.

Obviously I'm driving way slower, same effect though. Bad vibration and matching noise.

I'm willing to bet this is due to using my park brake when we got out to shoot for an hour during the last trip. The brakes probably get pretty warm from A-TRAC beating the crap out of them. If it doesn't go away by this weekend then I'm going to the dealer.

Maybe dumb but...i’ve had this EXACT problem since I bought my truck new. I’ve had TSB for pinion angle and a new front diff put on and still have a “light shudder” while slowing exactly at 20mph at the downshift....

Have you tried putting the truck in neutral while slowing? This would test if it’s just your drum brakes...

I brake in neutral more often than not. Just my driving style. Still shakes. It won't vibrate if I brake hard in gear.

I should note this is only apparent when coming down to a stop to turn etc, so I'm usually in neutral at 20 or so when it starts shaking.

Shit I forgot you have a MT...If it’s not brakes it may be pinion angle or egcs bushing from what I have read up on, but I am no mech...

ECGS is just the name of the company that makes a bushing to fit the diff. Lol. That always cracks me up on here.

It has crossed my mind that the needle bearings could be bad. But my problem isn't constant. If it doesn't go away after I cook the shit out of my brakes tonight... That'll be my next guess. It doesn't seem like pinion angle or axle wrap, I know what that feels like.

My bad...:crapstorm:noob just trying to help, thanks for the correction “needle bearing”. lol. I wish I knew what the axel wrap felt like...that was the other one i’ve heard about.

Does the needle bearing produce a pretty constant vibe?

I went out and did some hard braking runs from 70+ mph then drove around to let them cool down. The vibration is all gone. Brake judder... Who knew.

Still curious as to whether or not anyone else who's let their A-TRAC or crawl control actually do some work has had this issue.

For those of you that are still getting vibrations from the rear when braking, you might want to look into to what your axle runout measurements are.

I dropped off my truck because it just so happens there's a block heater recall. I mentioned the braking issues and rear end whine. They didn't find anything weird with the brakes. It hadn't vibrated since I beat on them a little anyways. They verified the rear end whine and are applying a TSB to add some sound deadener to the trans tunnel.

The noise didn't particularly bother me, and I don't believe it has anything to do with gear setup or bearings like the masses of Tacomaworld think. I've had a lot of experience to judge that by. Will be interesting to see if the sound goes away. It's a harmonic issue IMHO.

They loaned me a TRD OR with an auto trans. It shifts fine. I don't know what people are talking about when they say it sucks. Lol.

Why would axle runout only cause vibrations under braking and not also in the absence of braking?

Have you done the ECGS bushing replacement of your driver CV needle bearing?. I had the same issue until I replaced it. Granted my truck is 1.5” lifted.

is doing the ECGS bushing necessary if you have a stock truck?
