Is the aluminum coated at all or is it raw? Is there any sort of corrosion prevention between all the stainless parts and the aluminum parts? That is one giant galvanic couple waiting to happen.

 

Good point! We have looked into this and consulted with a few boat repair shops in the area. The base model is raw, but can be painted and we have powder coating on the hinges or closed cell foam tape as an option as well if you live in an area where the camper will be constantly exposed to a corrosive environment.

 

Galvanic corrosion necessitates an electrolyte (obviously water in this case), and there are no portions of our camper that wouldn’t shed water. Unless constantly submersed, there will not be an issue with galvanic corrosion on our campers. And the few exposed 18-8 SS fasteners are mounted vertically or inverted (under the overhang). 5052 is also highly corrosion resistant, but in theory is an anode.

This argument has popped up countless times on Expo in the past decade I’ve been on there. Mostly in the pop-up camper section. The conclusion: not an issue for campers. I couldn’t find any cases of this issue, except with vintage aluminum campers where galvanized or zinc coated fasteners were used.

I’m not a chemist, but from my googlefu research, galvanic corrosion is more of an issue when stainless steel is threaded directly into aluminum. Like when exposed stainless steel bolts are threaded directly into exposed aluminum extrusions... our campers aren’t constructed that way.

Edit: We will have a gasket between the hinges and aluminum. Either closed cell foam or rubber.

 

Decided to address this in real time since I’m at the shop. Happened to have some 1-1/4” wide closed cell sponge rubber tape.



And yeah, those are bucked aluminum solid rivets securing the lower awning track. 6” O.C. Devil’s in the details...

Any idea if you can fit a surfboard inside with the top down? I don't always like traveling with boards on my roof screaming come and steal me.

Also, is the shell initially a two part? If so, do you plan to just sell the top in the future as an option to put on other shells?

Sorry if I came of harsh last night. Not an excuse, but I’m functioning on minimal sleep and definitely geeked out a bit.

 

We’ll be releasing those very soon! Really stoked on the mattress covers.

We designed it to accommodate bedding and the mattress compresses a bit as well. I’m not sure how well a surfboard would do, but it’s a possibility. I’ll try it with mine in the next few days. It could definitely go inside if the mattress was removed from the bed extension and cabover. Not that hard to do. And the latches are pad lockable for extra security.

These might offer some security. Or would at least keep the honest people honest...

The top and shell are initially 2 parts, but bonded with many fasteners and a high quality adhesive/ sealant. This definitely increases the strength of the camper, which is a critical part of the design. They really act as one unit.

We don’t have immediate plans to sell just the top portion, but it is a consideration. I guess the top portion could get mounted onto a lumber rack, but I think someone’s already doing that

I even asked @mountainhabitatoverland what the inside looked like in the v1 on insta, was told to watch her story, sat through 5 minutes of talking while looking from the inside out, and no shot of the inside. Oh man these inside shots have to be good now, so much anticipation!!! I expect nothing but the pinnacle in #toyotafanboy, overlander-supreme, on-site in Death Valley, ultra staged, fancy lighting, nice camera, photoshopped, adventure-pup included, campfire-glammed-out, sell my house, super pics.

But seriously I’m pumped.

 

Hahaha! Yeah I actually did show the inside just after that for quite sometime in the live feed. My V1 was constructed differently than the V2 so I really didn’t want to skew anyone’s expectations of the V2 in comparing to mine, at least until it was released by the masterminds behind this game changer. I’m really sorry you can’t get that 5 min of your life back. I’ll try to make up for it: I’ve got your first beer upon meeting me!
