My Speedometer on my 2011 Taco reads 2 mph Fast at 70 mph, based upon GPS. I am still running the OEM 245/75 R-16 size tires that the truck came with. Is this normal? Is this something that the Dealer can correct, or do I need to increase the tire diameter slightly? I know that there are several tire comparison sites on the web that tell you how fast or slower the vehicle will be traveling after a tire size change. Thanks.

I believe it can be recalibrated at a Toyota service center. They will have the right computers to do it.

Its also well within the error allowable by modern speedometers. None are perfectly accurate. And if they are its just by chance. Also tires are not all th same size, even if they are listed as such. They are off by fractions of an inch which will effect readings.

Your concerned about a 2 MPH difference (every vehicle I've every been in and checked is the same)....Sounds like a 3rd Gen. problem.

As tires wear odometer and speedometer error changes. Smaller tire (due to wear) travels less distance than brand new tire, but computer doesn't "know this". It appears there is different software driving speedometer versus odometer. Both use data from a speed sensor that measures count of drive axle rotations. Not unusual for brand new tires on brand new truck will be off - 2-3 mph displayed higher than actual while odometer may be off only .1 mile in 100 miles traveled. Manufacturers protect themselves on speedometer by saying since what you see is 2 or 3 more more than actual - it's not their fault if you get a speeding ticket.

In the old days, speedo/odometer driven off of a cable and gear. Change gear to adjust for gear change or tire size change. Generally error was same % for both if designed correctly. BUT still had the same tire wear problem affecting error.

My 2015 was the same exact way. As soon as I went from 265/65r17 to 265/70r17 (+1") it made the speedo perfect.

Another valid reason to get bigger tires.

265/75s won't necessarily be any better. Compared to the GPS, which honestly could be just as inaccurate, I mean it probably can be off by 1-2 mph too. My stock 265/70/16s were like 1 mph under what the GPS read, then going up to 265/75 puts me 1-2 mph over once I hit 70mph which is a bit weird. Once I hit 80 the GPS typically reads 82-83.

I'll take a 2mph over read every day. As others have said, it helps keep the Fuzz of your back...

Changing to 265/75/16's fixed my problem. Speedo and GPS are now in harmony.

It's actually not really a problem. Your speedometer and odometer will change more than that as your tires wear down from new to old. My son is an electrician and usually commutes 50-75 miles one way to construction sites. A couple of years ago he came to me with a question. He said, " dad, I've been driving to this construction site every day for 6 months and it has always been exactly 100 miles round trip. For the last week it has been exactly 95 miles, why?" I asked him, didn't you buy new tires about a week ago? Same size tires on a small compact car, 5% change in the odometer.

The speedometer is not perfect from the factory. Manufacturers purposefully have it read a little faster for liability reasons.

This is true. My truck has 285/75/16 tires and I am like 1-2mph off at 65mph

Well that's not a factory size so it's expected.

I have the same Michelin tire in P245/75-16. It is 1" larger in diameter, and only .1" narrow in tread width than the P245/70-16. One thing I also like is that a 75 tire gives a little more protection to aluminum rims than a 70 series does from curb rash. Been extremely happy with the tire, especially in wet conditions.
