I need a new key for my 2015 Tacoma (it only came w/ 1) and the dealer quoted me $130+ for just the spare. I dont even need a remote because I had a viper remote starter installed and that fob replaces the factory ones.
Can this key just be ordered based on VIN?

If you have the 4 cylinder I cannot say for sure because I don’t know if any of them have it, but I am pretty certain all v6 motors came with immobilizers which means your key has a chip in it. If you get a normal $10 key and have them cut it, it will open doors but not start the truck. If you post a picture of your key, or look for a marking on it, right before the thicker part of the key. Some have a dot, some have a G, and I am sure there is other engravings too that tell you if it has a chip in the key or not.

Yes I have the "G" on my key.
So what do I get? Just want a spare key or two... And get them reprogrammed together with the one I have?

So I don’t have an exact part number but the key you have does have the chip inside it. So for them to start the truck you will need to get another key with the G engravings. You should be able to call a toyota dealer and give them your vin and they will be able to tell you the part number. I have heard some lock smiths can program/cut the keys so you may want to call some and see what they say.

I found "OEM 2012-2015 Tacoma G key" on eBay. $13 a piece. Needs to be cut and programmed. Reviews said the same. Has a p/n of...

Anyone in the North Texas area, I have a programmer that I bought for the chipped keys. Glad to let you borrow it for a six pack.

I don't need to program any keys (and being in Canada it would be a long trip), but the response from member atompson showcases one of the reasons that I have come to really appreciate the Tacoma World community. Classy.

A 2015 V6 should be a "G" key. Not all places can program those. My local dealer wanted $200 for the key & programming. I found a local locksmith and paid $40 for the key and $50 for programming. I had my key made just over a year ago.

Another solution. Tape your chipped under the dash somewhere hidden and get a couple regular keys cut. They will work to start your vehicle if the chipped key is within a few feet of the ignition....so I am told?

I didn't know about this when I bought the programmer. I don't know if this works in Tacoma or not. I'd be curious.

I just went to Home Depot for this issue. They have a scanner that claims to verify if your key is a transponder key. Mine could not be verified as such. The lady scanned the key and cut it on a plain blank. It opened the door lock and CRANKED the truck but no start. I tried holding my factory key on the steering column near the key switch but no luck in starting.
