Who did both, and wished they would have just waited and spent the $ on one. Im not looking for a rocketship of a truck, but something to run my 285's decently.
I have the $$ to do both, but would rather spend it on one if it will do the job just as well...

I have both and it's well worth it. Basically driving mountain passes on the highways out here in Utah. % are what I would say is the time spent in each gear. This is not scientific and just my observations over the past year

    Stock aside from 33" tires - 100% 3rd gear to maintain 75
    4.88 Gears with 33" tires - 80% 4th gear occasional 20% 3rd gear
OVTune+gears+33" tires - 80% 5th gear with about 20% of the time in 4th. NEVER seen 3rd gear

I live in Louisiana...0 mountains or hills, every once in a while, I may see some small ones in Mississippi...But crossing the Mississippi river bridge, and overpasses, is as high as we get to climb here..lol
Thats why I was wondering if I REEEEALY need both, or will one do

Sounds like TW and friends fixed the Turd Taco. This makes me wish I had money.

Tune. It is easily reversible if you ever decide to return the truck to stock to sell it or run smaller tires.

In your case I would say tune first - it's cheaper, easier, and reversible.

Flat ground you'll be at a lower RPM than with the gears anyway and with OVTunes latest updates you can maintain 6th on flat ground.

Has any one heard talks of some one producing 4.56s for our trucks? I think that 4.88s are over kill for what I need.

I'd go with the tune first. Cheaper and in 15 min. if you're not happy,
you could easily revert back to the stock tune and call it a day.

Gears do make life easier on the drivetrain though.

For the 8.75" rear end? I am only able to find 4.88 gears for the 8.75" online.

Nothing wrong with 4.88's even with stock tire size. Plenty of snap, slightly reduced mpg and about 2000 rpm at 65 mph. Someday 4.56's may arrive but not yet for those with 8.75 rear end.
