Didn't read 13 pages of discussion so please forgive me if this has been already covered.

An AR is likely the best HD gun due to it's lack of over penetration. Especially in dry wall. That said, I recommend to go with whatever you're most comfortable and familiar with and always be diligent of what's beyond your target.

Everyone should have a shotgun. I recommend a H&R Pardner pump, its a copy of the 870, uses most of the parts off an 870 and can be bought new for less than $200.00. You can also buy it in various lengths. I have an 18"

The last one I worked with went by the name ‘Crazy’. Even corporate management knew him as ‘Crazy’. He went back for a second tour for another round of Tunnel Rat. I just spoke to him a few days ago and he’s still Crazy AF. LOL. Love that dude.

+1 for the 870.... Shotguns are versatile, you can change the type of ammo you use without changing the barrel or any of the internals. I have 00 buck for home defense. The 870 is nice because its reliable and you can easily customize it.... kinda like a taco. My upgraded 870 is one of my favorite firearms. I sent mine to Vangcomp to have the full tactical upgrade. Less felt recoil and tighter shot patterns even with birdshot shells. IMG_1121.jpg

You can carry slugs on the side and if need be body pierce a mofro at distance.

    Remington 870
    H&R Pardner (Chinese 870)
    Winchester 1300

The H&R is my ‘go to’ that stays handy to reach. The 870 used to be but is now the closet gun. Should everyone have to fall back to my walk in closet then this can clear a hole...in any direction. The 1300 was a gift and just looks pretty dressed in black. It has some quirks I don’t like for defense purposes.

Here’s a decent combat load. He goes over the top to chamber one where I’ve been taught/shown/learned to go underneath. Over the top makes your pump hand come back over and underneath to grip and push forward. Or push forward OTT and then back around to grab the pump. Just an extra movement is all. If you have any sort of larger optic this can’t be done as efficiently.

This guy shows from under. It’s a lot smoother and faster.

This guy goes over the top but also highlights a QUIRK of the 870. The QUIRK that sold me on it compared to others. You can bump the round in the tube back into the tube when half racked allowing it to stay loaded while you insert a slug. Mossbergs WILL NOT DO THIS. The H&R Pardner will do this and I believe the Maverick is like the Mossberg. I know the H&R will because I have one and dressed up a little.

I'm in the pro shotgun camp, but that's just because I enjoy trap shooting. A good friend of mine, who is a marine, once told me that the average home owner doesn't have enough training and practice to be effective with a handgun under duress.

He's probably right, but the same statement is probably true for shotguns. Some of the posts about the effective spread with buchshot only being a couple inches are probably right. I feel like with bird shot and a very open choke that I could probably get a 6" spread at 10 feet though, so I keep a shotgun in my closet.

I have found that some indoor gun ranges don't allow shotguns because the shot tends to spread into adjacent laness, which is a bummer during the winter. Outdoor shotgun ranges are affordable and some state parks even have places where you can shoot clays for free, so that is a plus.

Correct about the spread. Both of my shortys are 18.5” barrels and using skeet shot have maybe a 30” spread at 20-25’. In the friendly confines of a home I would expect maybe an 8-10” spread at the most and that’s across a large room or down the hallway.

Don't buy a shotgun. Use the money you were going to spend and take your mom out to dinner.

you can buy a cheap shotgun for @ $200. A nicer shotgun is @ $400, at that price you are into low end AR15 territory.
